Anybody ever have a coin submitted in original Mint set cello, grade Au-58 . Just curious, becuase once I get the true views back I am going to post such a coin, and why whether it grades MS vs 58 is huge. I have a pic of the coin in question still in cello minutes before I submitted at MGM Invitational show, and will compare to when true view is posted.
Okay, so here is the deal working on getting everything posted.

Several months ago, I had purchased an estate that had numerous mint sets from 60's and been there for decades . Upon closer inspection of the 1960 set, I saw 2 nickels in set that had considerably more step details than what is typically encountered. First coin I submitted was the philly coin a few months ago as it has a few known examples. Submitted in cello, and it graded 65 NOT FS . I kind of agreed with this one becuase it has a couple of contact marks across steps which negate the designation. Here is the pic https://pcgs.com/cert/48900359

So that brings us around to the 60-d which no known examples have been graded by PCGS. The coin from this set had more step details than I have ever seen on a 60-D and thought it might have a chance at pulling the FS designation. Stil in its original cello, was submitted to PCGS at the Invitational. Low and behold, PCGS grades the coin Au-58 which negates the FS designation automatically, becuase anything lower than 60, they dont designate FS. I am not an expert in Jefferson FS nickels or claim to be as some of the members here like leo, etc, But, what are your thoughts is it just a near miss, or could there have been a chance based on the Step details visible. I know PCGS has been a little more forgiving on certain FS dates in past compared to stronger struck dates. I knew that it was at best a low grade MS, but in original cello, and not damaged should still be a MS-60 Min IMO.

I've never submitted one but I've seen them still in the cello.

I’ve heard of details-cleaned results for coins that were submitted in original Mint packaging, so AU58 is believable.

Interesting. I’m looking forward to seeing the Trueviews. If it’s really gemmy looking it would be great in an Everyman Registry set.

Wow, the trueview does make it look like high point rub on both the obverse and reverse. Too bad that the "rub" was imparted through the cello packaging. I actually see how this was called a 58. I put more fault on the US Mint, and whomever in the last 64 years handled, shipped, jostled, and mutilated that sealed mint set, than I do PCGS for its grade.

I do not think either coin had any chance of getting a FS designation from the TV's.

So that brings us around to the 60-d which no known examples have been graded by PCGS.

PCGS had graded an example in MS64FS. It sold for around $32k-$34k at Stacks and was thereafter the cover coin (“Greatest Jefferson 5C in the World!) as I recall of a leading Coin magazine. The owner thereafter decided to resell it at Stacks. I bought the coin for JHF the second time around at around $10k as I recall essentially with instructions from JHF to destroy the coin (as in throw it in the Ocean after giving the insert tag back to PCGS to remove it from the pop report) if PCGS refused to buy it back and remove it from the pop report themselves. JHF took his collecting very seriously and was fully prepared to “invest” $10k-$15k in “cleaning up” the FS Jefferson series.

So, I brought the coin to DH and told him the story and DH said PCGS would do the right thing as usual. DH went to each and every full time grader at the company and requested their opinion of the 5C sitting in the PCGS-MS64FS holder. BY A VOTE OF 9-5, IT WAS DECIDED TO REMOVE THE FULL STEP DESIGNATION ON THE 5C AND GIVE IT BACK TO ME IN A FLIP FOR $100 LESS THAN WHAT JHF PAID FOR THE SLABBED COIN AT THE STACKS AUCTION!!

    PCGS AT THEIR FINEST!!
    JHF (RIP) AT HIS FINEST
I GUESS ME DOING A GOOD JOB AS JHF’S BUYING AGENT BY REFUSING TO BUY THE COIN FOR JHF THE FIRST TIME IT WAS AUCTIONED AT STACKS AS I DETERMINED IT WAS NOT FULL STEPS UNDER PCGS’ STANDARD AT THAT TIME. I HAD PERMISSION TO PAY $50,000.00 FOR THE COIN (OR MORE- REALLY UP TO ME), BUT REFUSED TO BUY IT AT ANY PRICE. JHF WAS NOT THRILLED WHEN HE HEARD THE NEWS THE NIGHT I DID NOT BID (BUT LUCKILY DID NOT FIRE ME EITHER)! IT WAS THE LAST COIN IN HIS 1938-64 REGISTRY SET NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE SET IN PCGS FULL STEP - A GOAL HE HAD SET FOR HIMSELF FROM THE DAY HE BOUGHT HIS FIRST PCGS JEFF!!

To the OP - your coin is a lovely non-FS example!

Thanks guys I respect you'all's opinions. If not a chance at FS, and in all honesty, I was leery myself as it didnt quite meet what I would consider FS, I am more relieved now that it if it didnt make FS, the grading of it being 58 dosn't really matter at this point. Ill just say, IMO one of the strongest step details I have personally seen on a 60-d.

To be honest, everything else in the order came back spot on as to what I had figured, so I wasn't barking at PCGS grading, in fact for the majority, we agree 99% of the time. Just didnt have too much experience in FS designated nickels

I gather this thread is more about the FS designation rather than an MS coin getting a 58 numeric grade, but I've had any number of coins purchased in MS holders get graded as an AU upon resubmission, and visa-versa.

That’s an UNC that the high points just toned differently due to air differences from contact with the packaging. That said I think PCGS made a business decision due to the rarity of FS and didn’t have to go on the record due to the AU grade.
