ANA Rosemont Special Hyatt group rate is higher than regular one!

I plan on attending the ANA in Rosemont this year. Usually the group rate is a money saver. Not so at the Hyatt this time if you are staying on the weekend. My wife wanted to see the show on Friday and then do some sightseeing. Perhaps earlier days would be a better deal through group rates? Both queries were for the same two days at the Hyatt. As you can see it would pay to book independently instead of using the ANA member rate.

Gee, the airline never put us up there when I would get stuck at O’hare. It was usually a Holiday Inn Express that goes for $79 a night

With FanExpo taking place the following week, looks like we pretty much have the convention center to ourselves this year. Makes sense that hotel rooms will be more available and cheaper than usual.

I find this frequently happens with shows and conventions. I almost always book my own room direct with the hotel for business conventions and shows. Plus it is easier to make changes if needed.

That's what makes the rate "special".

Does the ANA know about this?

    Good question.

I'm not necessarily defending it or even saying that this is the explanation, but perhaps the negotiated group rate is based on the hotel setting aside a block of rooms. If occupancy in general is down as thebl dates approach then regular rooms might see a decrease in price.

    As stated in the OP:

So checking the Hyatt website for Tuesday night (first day of show Tuesday) and Wednesday nights:

I know some who stay at the Aloft and it is currently $170 for Tues & Wed night.

This ^^^. Cherry picking two nights at the end of the show, and then starting a thread about how the ANA show rate is a scam is kind of disingenuous, at a minimum.

Coming in at the end of the show, and then spending some time sightseeing in beautiful Rosemont, means you really don't need the benefit of a negotiated show rate. 'Nuff said.

It really doesn't warrant a thread to let the world know that weekend rates in Rosemont are not the same as during the week, when trade shows are in progress. Or that a negotiated show rate might not be the best deal during that time.

I never stated that it was a scam. Rather my point was that it pays to shop around. I acknowledged that it may have been a better deal on earlier days too. As far as whether it warrants a thread or not that is not your call. The show is STILL in progress on Friday night and some dealers stay on Saturday which is a free admission day. In the end I booked Friday and Saturday night at the senior rate and got an even better deal. Compare prices to make the best decision for yourselves…..that was my point.

Fair enough, and sorry if I misunderstood. Of course, it always pays to shop around. But, the gist I got from the thread is that ANA's deal sucks, and that's not really the case.

Yes, the show will STILL be in progress on Saturday (not really on Friday night, given that the show closes at 6:00 and last entry is 5:30), but you'll find the place at least half empty during the last 6 or so hours on free Saturday. Which is the main reason it's free -- to give people less to complain about when they see how empty it is, and to try to give at least a few dealers who would otherwise want to go home a reason to stick around to do some deals with the least sophisticated members of the general public.

If you are serious about the show, rather than taking in the sights of Rosemont, you'll want to be there on Tuesday or Wednesday, not Friday night. By Friday night, you'll be catching a break on the hotel as lots of dealers will have checked out by then, and you'll find that you got exactly what you paid for with your senior discount. At least in terms of the show.

Rosemont is pretty dead most weekends, which is why hotel rates are so attractive. Not an accident, and not a shock. Most conventions, even the ANA show, take place during the week because most conventioneers want and expect to be home for the weekend. Same for business travelers, which is why the O'Hare Hyatt has good senior rates on a weekend, but not on a Tuesday.

With all due respect, you didn't discover fire here by finding that a public rate at an airport/convention hotel on a weekend can beat a convention rate that is static for the duration of a convention that does not begin and end on a weekend. But, sure, if you're popping in at the end of a show, you can save a few bucks by not paying the higher rate people actually hitting the show during Prime Time have to pay.

    No reason for disagreement here.

If you booked at a higher rate, just cancel and rebook at the lower rate. The post is potentially useful for those who may have booked at a higher rate and now know that they can get a better deal.

Of course! My point is that they can't. Most people going to the show won't be staying Friday or Saturday night. Which is why the rates are lower then.

Nothing to see, or save, here, unless you are doing what @Tomthemailcarrier is. His post was a good and valuable one for the small minority of people doing what he is, who wouldn't have otherwise checked to see if public hotel rates at the end of the show were different than those at the beginning, just like the price of admission itself.

I will be there when the ribbon is cut on Tuesday morning. Fortunately I’ve got a friend that owns a condo in downtown Chicago that will accommodate me. Plus he has a parking spot for me. So, the best of both worlds. Coins unimpeded by a spouse for three days then my wife will join me to finish up the show and check out the sights in Chicago.

If I go, I've got 5 friends' houses to choose from. I plan on negotiating to see who will let me stay the freest.
