Where does one get a sense of the market for Canada Victoria Large Cents? Rarity, Red or Red/Brown, which dates are tougher / easier, best places to buy or sell, leading dealers, reference materials (Charlton and beyond), collector hangout locations (PCGS Forum but where else?), clubs, etc.

There's quite a few Vicky LC collectors on here, but check out CoinsandCanada site and CoinCommunity sites/forums. CaC has links to prices(Ebay & auctions), grades, and links to some references. You can also go to the collector sections of PCGS for info and scarcities from the individual collections with PCGS. Cointalk also has a foreign section with Canadian content sometimes.

If you are really into Specimens and high grade cents, go to Rob Turner's VictorianCent website. He has the #1 PCGS Canadian large cent Regiistry set and was the 2011 RCNA Bowman award for best research book. He is also the author of now 5 great, thick, fully researched reference books that are a must to have in any library. The last one on specs/proofs is available from the RCNA only, but they also carry(I think) some of the earlier tomes. When you go to Rob's site, be sure to hook onto all the specific links that he has for his site. You can order the privately published books directly from him through his site:

Believe me, Vicky large cents are a collector's dream and will last you a lifetime. I've been in them for way over 40 years.
Lastly, if you want the complete course for the 210+ varieties of the 1859 large cents, fully illustrated and with a complete scarcity listing for each of the Obv's, Rev's and marriages for this 9 million mintage, then you have to look into the Haxby sites, of which there are different sections. I second everything that @syl wrote. I would also add acquiring a copy of the 2011 Charlton volume 1. In the back is a section, some 80 pages, on Vicky large cent varieties. Also, look for the variety books put out by Zoell in the 60's - 70's.
The market for high grade red examples is fairly strong. As is the market for average circs. But VF to MS63 is relatively weak.
BTW - nice looking "normal" 1888.

I echo what 1960's Giants answered in the thread about the 2011 Charlton annual guide with the Vicky section in the back. 4 of the 6 authors of the Vicky variety section are active on the CoinCommunity site, including myself, so you can't go wrong about posting any Cannada questions there.
Do Edward VII cents have any varieties that are collected ?
Yes, pick up a copy of the Charlton reprint of Jack Griffin's variety catalogue "Dominion of Canada Die Varieties, Ed VII and Geo V Large Cents". It is the "Charlton Monograph 3" as the softcover with B&W photos.. Jack sold the copyrights to Charlton before his death, so that's where you neeed to get it or from Ebay, etc.
