Only a small handful of people could even do this job, but those qualified laugh at insulting pay and PCGS will never get top talent.
Okay cool then they can take the similar opportunity out there for the $300k they're worth, problem solved it will sort itself out and PCGS will be left wanting.
Nobody is saying a photographer is worth a $300k salary. But I certainly think they'd need to pay ~$110k to replace Phil with a pretty good photographer... And I think they'd find one if they were willing to pay that. An extra $2k/mo on the budget I tossed up there goes a long way to balancing it out.
I could have used any number my point is if there are opportunities out there for a similar role at a much higher rate then it will work itself out and PCGS won't get the talent they want/need. I suspect there aren't those opportunities this good out there and PCGS will fill the role with a super talented photographer and take care of them long term. The jump from 65k-95k up to the 110k you're suggesting is tiny for a business the size of PCGS if they have the right person. It's not uncommon for a business to hire someone, find out they're amazing and go oh boy we better do whatever we can to not lose this person. Source: myself with a new hire I found in December.
The one taking this job isn't locking themselves into a lifetime contract at 65k-95k they're getting their feet in the door with a chance to start an amazing career they're passionate about. I just don't think it's anything to be insulted about and for those that are insulted I guarantee there's multiples more lining up for the opportunity.
Yeah? Where was that attitude when Phil handed in his resignation? They should have moved heaven and earth to keep him, but they didn't, and that tells us everything we need to know about their thoughts on photography compensation. [Redacted]
It's pretty indicative of a change of approach at Collectors. Cards and memorabilia are really driving the growth now, not coins, so that is where the resources go.

Orange County California is one of the most expensive places to live in the country. California has the most expensive gas and electricity in the country and I believe next to NY and maybe NJ we have the highest state income tax. Traffic is a disaster and homelessness in Southern California is out of control. If it wasn’t for the weather and the close proximity to the beach, mountains, and desert few people would live here with the way things are now.
Sounds like a Fox News commentary.
California is the best, that's why it is expensive.
I have lived in California my whole life. I don't even remember the last time I was in a "traffic Jam". Not an issue in 99% of the State. The homeless are here because of the fantastic weather where they will not die on the streets from freezing to dearth. Californians have empathy and care for each other.
California is a paradise.
Great. No traffic problems for you. Then again, you don't commute to work. So, maybe your empathy isn't complete? California ranks #6 in the country for longest average commute. FWIW. So it isn't the worst or the best.
But, as a New Yorker, there is no doubt that we (CA and NY) do have high taxes and expensive gas and electricity - whether reported on FOX, MSNBC or CNN.
And I love the way that you turned homelessness into a positive commentary on the weather.
There's a lot of room between hell and paradise. And I'm pretty sure CA occupies some of that space.

Yeah? Where was that attitude when Phil handed in his resignation? They should have moved heaven and earth to keep him, but they didn't, and that tells us everything we need to know about their thoughts on photography compensation. Also I heard through the grapevine (no idea how true it is or not) that he had his replacement fully trained and lined up, and said replacement walked a week before Phil left.
It's pretty indicative of a change of approach at Collectors. Cards and memorabilia are really driving the growth now, not coins, so that is where the resources go.
I agree they should have done whatever they could have to keep him but I assume they weren't all that bad to him as he was there like almost 20 years wasn't he? Maybe I'm way off there.
Anyways I'll agree to disagree with the insulting part - that was really what irked me (and it may not even have been one of your posts originally). I just know if I was 24 again and saw this I'd be on a plane as soon as possible and would figure out my living situation on the fly. And if a year later it didn't work out I'd be 25 and figure out the next thing and have some great experience under my belt.

And at least one person thinks that what others believe to be reasonable, is "cheapskate". That one person has made his thoughts very clear, by posting insults about PCGS multiple times in this thread.
By the way, it's not an offer by PCGS - it's a listed salary range, which could obviously be negotiated.

I like @PhilLynott s attitude. I was mid twenties not too long ago, living in Boston and SF and there is not much in that budget posted that I recognize. It reads like "Average American consumer" way more than a hustling single guy looking for opportunities.

Of course you don't and you obviously have no idea what is involved in producing exceptional images and why it is so important in Branding.
I don't think anyone questioned the need to have good images. In fact, a number of people have expressed the importance of it. But, as a highly empathetic Californian, you might recognize why some people who make less than $100k felt that categorizing the nearly $100k salary range as "insulting" was condescending and perhaps "insulting" in its own right.

I have no idea why Phil left. But I do know that many people leave jobs for things other than money whether it’s to relocate geographically, take on a new challenge, work with a certain team, etc.
Phil’s departure without context does not say anything about PCGS’ pay or their efforts to keep him.
Again, I suspect PCGS will pay market to attract the person they need regardless of the posting. It feels silly to get hung up on it or be “insulted” by it. Salary is negotiable.

No, I don't. Do you know what it takes to get a doctorate in Chemistry and then post-doc for 2 to 4 years before you can even apply for the $50k per year job? And then we hear that you think a burger flipper is worth more than that.

For (12) years, GC sold about a billion dollars in coins without “state of the art” pics. and grew its business by leaps and bounds. Had GC not recently hired a talented photographer, I have little doubt GC would have sold its next billion dollars in coins and “handled” whatever “complaints” existed exactly as they did on the first billion dollars in coins.
I personally own dozens and dozens of Registry Sets, including not one, but, two, Hall of Fame awarded sets. I’ve participated in the Set Registry since 1998 when there wasn’t even a computer system for these coins, let alone the potential for nice photography. I still own many of the coins I had in 1999/2000 when Set registry was a paperback book! And, we all got by just fine without a computerized set registry, although now it is nice to have it on the computer. So, needless to say, my world has not been “shattered” by a possible short-term decline in picture quality while PCGS brings on the fresh young talent in that department. Anyone who’s world is shattered by this, obviously wasn’t around in 1998 or 1999 when the winners of the set registry were not known for sure until PCGS got back from the printer with its 500 paperback “books” showing who won each category for that past year (that were passed out at one particular show and then unavailable until the following year).
Could you imagine the talk if PCGS still didn’t have set registry (or Coinfacts) on the computer! The “greatest pics on Earth vs. nice pics only” pale in comparison to PCGS’ state of the art computerized set registry and Coinfacts (as compared to what it would be like without those advances - as we all “dealt with those times” just 20 or so short years ago while enjoying our annual paperback set registry award books!
