The 1953 NY Giants football team played in the 55,000 seat capacity Polo Grounds in NY. They averaged 25k fans per game.
The stadium was half empty all year long. Please tell us good Father how the NY Giants were making so much money back then without a TV contract.
Please tell us good father Robinson how the Giants owner got rich with a half empty stadium? I’ll be praying for you to come up with a good answer.
Here, I’ll tell you when the NFL owners first started making good money. Around 1971, when they told Topps Topps could no longer use their logos on football cards. They demanded more money. Before 1971 they applauded Topps for the publicity. Now with TV making them richer along with NFL clothing apparel being sold in the late 60’s for the first time ever, they had the leverage they never ever had before.
You guys need to understand the less is more dynamic of the NFL.
Baseball can fill stadiums over a long season. Hockey does also. Football has never tried because it’s not their philosophy. They make tons of money playing only once a week now. The USFL folded even with a TV contract and HOF players. They know why.
Football is such a brutal game yet Peyton Manning never missed a game. Brett Favre 1 due to injury and Chris Sale missed more games then Tom Brady.
Emmitt Smith missed 11 games his entire career. Mario Lemieux missed 50 games In Just One season because of back surgery due to all the crosschecks he took in hockey.

The NFL from 1947 through 1960 played a 12 game schedule.
The AFL in 1960 introduced a 14 game schedule.
Now the NFL plays a 16 game schedule.
Why do they keep increasing games if it’s so rough?
Jim Brown, the games greatest player left the league because there was better money elsewhere.
The league couldn’t keep its #1 star.
Lol
Did Gordie Howe leave the NHL ? Lol. Rocket Richard ?
Baseball was harder on Chris Sale then football was on Tom Brady.
How tough is punting and extra points ? Lol
5 tackles a game on defense once a week? Lol. That should be outlawed ! Lol
Do you really not understand this or are you being obtuse?
here we go. owners have increased games because they want to make more money. isn't that obvious? It has taken 75 years to add 5 games to the schedule. why do you think that is? because the owners only want to make a little more money? or could there be another reason...
Lots of players have left lots of sports by retiring early. I don't see what the point is. Brown could have had many reasons. Barry sanders did the same exact thing 30 years later when he was making millions at football.
point on Sale? his injuries are repetitive motion injuries. ie, throwing a baseball thousands of time not because of getting tackled. Brady did miss an entire season because he got his knee blown up.
5 tackles a game? there are 160 tackles on average and many times that more hits per game that are not tackles.

Maybe the priests were mad and didn't want them to play twice a week since they all skipped church on Sundays.
Then tell us Father Robinson why if the owners and players could get richer by playing more why they chose not to ?
Also explain why Jim Brown left the league if it was such a great place of employment.
Why did the NFL only play 12 games when it could have scheduled 16 or more games ? They hired guys to play who didn’t even practice with the team all week. Were they against making more money?
Jim Brown wants to know good Father.
The owners would LOVE to. it is the players who ALWAYS fight against playing more games. Why do you think that is? the answer is obvious. it is the players bodies on the line. there is a limit to what the human body can go through.
not sure why you are so stuck on Jim Brown. He played 9 years in the league. it is not like he retired after 3 or 4. maybe he got bored. lost the love of the game. small injuries piled up. perhaps he made enough money that he did not need to destroy his body any longer.

They were making so much money the same way 1948robinson said the Cubs were making money in the 58 season I believe he said when they were drawing roughly half of what the Giants football team was. some teams don't draw as much as others. some seasons are up, some down. It is funny that if the Giants were losing so much money back then that here we are 70 years later and they are still solvent and making money...
If the owners were only "making good money" by 1971, I don't think any of them would have still been owners, they would have been out of business. the league began in 1920. If they were only making money after 50 years, the whole thing would have folded long before 71.
so... they started making "good money" around 1971 when they told topps they could no longer use logos on football cards? is that truly the correlation you are making? I certainly hope not. less publicity=more profit...
just so you know, the first NFL TV contract was back in 1939. there was a harris poll in 1965 that said the NFL was already more popular than MLB. The AFL/NFL merger happened, the Super Bowl became a thing. There were lots of things going on that was making the NFL blow up.

There is nothing the owners would like more than more NFL games every season. they fought tooth and nail for just one more. The more games, the bigger the TV contracts. The more games, the more publicity and eyeballs on the league.
Peyton Manning never missed a game??? what very little credibility you had is now gone. Peyton Mannings career was almost ended by a severe neck injury that he needed a significant surgery to repair. He missed an entire season due to this.
Lets be honest, you don't watch football do you? Football is such a brutal game that one of its greatest all time players missed an entire season, almost had to retire because of injury, and you didn't know about it.
I am not sure why you are so stuck on Chris Sale? we arent even talking about baseball in this discussion.

Figure it out for yourself but use other reasons to back up your theories because the fact is, your statements above about nobody coming to games in the 1950's and nobody going to games in the 1950's because they went to Church instead, were simply wrong. Completely wrong. At that point, you have to rectify those mistaken claims, then maybe the discussion could go further.

As per the discussion, one can cite different players playing for a long time without being hurt and point to Peyton Manning or Favre... but the flip side is Joe Theisman, or worse, Darryl Stingley.
It is debatable which sport is 'tougher' to play physically, but if anyone thinks football isn't extremely tough and dangerous to one's body, then that pretty much says it all about their 'expertise'.
There are examples in all sports of both long careers and ones cut short. Gordie Howe was a 51 year old man playing in the NHL. He was also better than Bobby Orr.

I am not sure why you are so stuck on Chris Sale? we arent even talking about baseball in this discussion.
straw man.
Sorry Craig Robinson.

Then he had that neck thing later.
I was referring to his streak.

Ummmm, that is not at all what you said regarding Peyton Manning. your quote was...
"Football is such a brutal game yet Peyton Manning never missed a game"
you were frightfully wrong, then found an article discussing mannings earlier games played streak which you then quoted and reframed your previous narrative around. that was fraudulent man. You and everyone else reading this thread knows it.
nice try. actually, strike that. it was a terrible attempt to cover up a ridiculous error.
You obviously look for perfection in speech. Must be brutal living up to your standards. Feel sorry for you.
Manning was well known for his streak and durability.
That was the point.
I look for accuracy in statements. If your statements are not accurate and when called on it you backpedal and say something completely different it is called moving the goalposts. How can one have a sensical discussion with a person whose statements are not accurate?
If mannings streak was the point of your statement, you should have mentioned it in your statement. you didn't.
You just used Manning without a Capitol M. The stockade for you sir.
How could a perfectionist make such a glaring error lol

The most dangerous sport is probably neither football or hockey, it is without a doubt cycling at the top level, even tho' f and h are very dangerous. Take for example, pretty much every year someone in the pro European peloton gets killed in a race via a very bad crash typically at high speed. Just this week Wout Van Aert's classic season was put to an end when he touche dwheels at 80 kph with his team mate and went down - broken collar bone, 7 cracked ribs, back covered in road rash, immediate surgery at the hospital along with 3 other riders. This kind of thing happens on a regular basis.
I have always said the 2 toughest sports are cycling and hockey - each takes an enormous level of fitness (no lineman with big guts in either), enormous skill equal to any sport, super high pain tolerance needed, and more danger than other sports. Football sure, alot of skill needed, alot of fitness, but the protection they wear keeps the overall danger of injury and death lower than hockey and cycling.

Emmitt Smith missed 11 games his entire career. Mario Lemieux missed 50 games In Just One season because of back surgery due to all the crosschecks he took in hockey.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
There is nothing the owners would like more than more NFL games every season. they fought tooth and nail for just one more. The more games, the bigger the TV contracts. The more games, the more publicity and eyeballs on the league.

Sorry Craig Robinson.

@craig44 looks like you picked up a troll. Likely the Orr guy.
Ummmm, that is not at all what you said regarding Peyton Manning. your quote was...

Patriots vs Seahawks Super Bowl.
2 guys on the Patriots defense made over 5 tackles that day.
4 guys on the Seahawks made over 5 tackles that day.
Everyone else on defense was 4 tackles or much less that day.
They only play 1 game a week. Lol

your point? there were 93 team tackles. 11 QB hits. 4 sacks. and a whole lot of blocks and other hits throughout the game.
remember, the average hockey game consists of between 20-30 hits total.
I think you are punching above your weight class here.

I think Applejacks and 4for4 should debate 4boston and goldenage about who's tougher:
Terry Bradshaw or Bobby Orr?
they could add in George Brett and Mike Schmidt into the "toughest" debate as well. this could get juicy
