Happy 90th, Leroy Van Allen!

messydeskmessydesk Posts: 19,969 ✭✭✭✭✭

Today is Leroy Van Allen's 90th birthday. Yesterday, John Roberts (ANACS) made the 90 minute drive to Leroy's senior living center to deliver a bunch of cards a lot of VAM people signed over the past couple months. The pictures below are his. There is a party for him today there and a nice display of his work in the main lobby.

Happy Birthday! The contributions this man has made to the attribution of Morgan Dollars is monumental to say the least. and every serious Morgan Dollar collector should own the book shown on the second shelf of that photo.

From left to right on the middle shelf, the soft-bound pre-VAM book where he first started cataloging varieties and devised his cataloging method (1965), the first edition VAM book co-authored with A George Mallis (1971), second edition (1976), third edition (1991), and fourth edition (1996). I have a hardbound 1965 book from a small special edition run.

Middle of the bottom shelf is the "Rota-Flip," (1991) which is used to measure die rotation. The booklet behind it is a user guide that includes standard rotations for most types half cent through $20. Other publications on the bottom shelf are a stack of monographs he wrote (left) and samples of the annual VAM supplement he used to put out (right).

Had there been another display case available, he'd probably have stuff about the 1925 Maxwell and other old cars he had restored.
