What is causing the reddish tint on this gold piece?

I've seen two types of reddish color on gold. This is one. I call it toning and it can be proved that some of it is from the copper in the alloy. The other is darker and can be flaked off or removed chemically. It occurs on gold found in the ground or sea salvage.

I've seen a third type of reddish color on gold coins- iodine added to the surface. But that doesn't appear to be the case here.

I've seen a 4th type. Strawberry jam from a sloppy dealer eating a sandwich.

Looks like common gold toning. Gold does not tone to any far extent but the reddish glow gives credit to the originality similar like a dark crusty bust half.

Remember the gold coins in the Boscoreale treasure. Some, or all, had red toning which is different from the ones mentioned above.
