Do you ever get bored with coins?

I've never been one to go after high-dollar coins and primarily focus on a few Danscos that I have.
Lately, I have found myself getting really bored with scrolling through EBay looking at stock photos of the same old, same old. We don't get many shows near me and B&M shops are scarce.
Question is, do you, as dealer or collector, get bored and if so, how do you fight it?

Sometimes, I look at it more as a** I am in a rut**. Since covid, my collecting of coins has dropped significantly. Money got tighter, over seas purchasing has become more of a gamble, and prices for coins have shot up. I was lucky to get 7 coins total last year.
I have also reached a point where I have gotten much more picky. I've been collecting since 1986, with some breaks over the years, but I keep my interest in the hobby going, by posting on boards, enjoying the coins I do have, and admiring what others acquire. My next purchase will show itself sometime, and I will get a new coin, when it does appear.
Buy a book related to the coins you would like to see while you're scrolling through eBay. Maybe try, "Lost and Found Coin Hoards and Treasures" by Q. David Bowers. It will grab you!

There are times I get bored or disappointed with the physical pieces and searching for them. I usually either decide to do some research or go on to other things for awhile. Something always snatches me back.
A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.
A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

As much as i enjoy my collection, the thought of adding to it thrills me more. It's a sickness, i admit it. 😂

To me, major distorted error coins fascinate me. I see examples I have never seen before every week.
It works the brain trying to figure out how some error coins happened at the US Mint.
It is a really cool field in the hobby.
No I enjoy it. It is a big part of my daily life to look for coins. I will also watch auctions even if there is nothing in them for my collection. Heritage has world coin auctions every Thursday night that I follow. I pass time either cooking, playing or spending time with my pet, going for walks, talking to close family, listening to the NHL or NFL via online radio almost daily, reading, music, fireplace in the winters, bbq in the warmer weather and video games.
I look at my coin related books almost daily. I have lots of books and I don't min looking at the same ones over and over again.
I have no kids or girlfriend/wife and I don't want any I like my routine it gives me peace.
Oh and I love a few good cups of coffee every day no sugar as per doctors orders.

If you are not enjoying it then rip it up and start over again with something new that gets your juices flowing again.
Appreciating what we have is a huge part towards finding peace and happiness in life. But as I said if you find neither then change things up. Find a series you can enjoy studying for years. A series with books is best.

That's what I do. Right now, coins are in 4th place. We'll see what the future holds.
Seldom, but when that happens I just move on to another hobby for a bit. Honestly scrolling thru ebay listings would bore me in ten minutes, I prefer to look other places and continue to learn to keep the hobby fresh.

I've been avidly collecting both since the first grade.
Sometimes if not often, for no particular reason, I'll place more emphasis on one over the other. But then sooner or later the other hobby takes precedence.
I also began collecting stamps in the first grade. However I don't think I've added one stamp to it in a few decades. Although I've got my eye out for a Penny Black, but only if the price is right.
Definitely. I've settled into a thing where I get really into it from about November to March and then when conditions are better for my more active, outdoor hobbies I back burner it until the next fall.
Coins have been my passion, since I was a child. Started my registry set, almost 20 years ago, and have been a full-time coin maniac ever since. Not a day went by that I didn't think about them. Searching, purchasing, bidding, researching, going to shows and participating here on these boards. When you do something full-bore, everyday, for almost 20 years you are bound to get a little burnt out. Coins have brought me so much entertainment, joy, education and satisfaction. It has certainly improved my mental and physical well being by giving me such a positive and pleasurable outlet. Ever since completing my Walker set; I have felt tremendous satisfaction and achievement and/or accomplishment. I have since dabbled in other series but, now; I read more and find time for other hobbies and activities. Everyone needs a break (especially, after 20 years!!
lol). I plan to pick it up again down the road and in the future. I still go to shows and enjoy the friendships and interactions both here and in person.

Based on your ID I assume you are located in Georgia. Just thought I would share some info on GA shows.
The Greater Atlanta Coin Show is held at the Hilton Atlanta/Marietta Hotel& Conference Center usually on the first or second Sunday of each month, about 30 dealers and a little bit of everything for sale.
There are also two monster shows, three hundred+- dealers, held in Dalton GA. The GNA (Georgia Numismatic Association) show April 19-21, 2024 and the BRNA (Blue Ridge Numismatic Association) show August1-3, 2024. Both are well worth the trip with reasonable hotels nearby and there is always an optional side trip to Chattanooga. Trust me, you won't be bored if you go to either of these shows.

The search process can become boring at times when it seems fruitless for a spell, but bored, never.
Make it your profession. You will force yourself out of your comfort zone to see more and learn the most. Not an easy solution lol
But I have yet to get tired of my collecting focus of bust halves.

I only get bored looking at coins that I am not fond of, disappointed buying, & not thrilled with. Then I upgrade and buy another that keeps the interest & me going strong.
Not really tried of coins but not having quick access to them when I want to go through ‘em!
And it’s especially bad this time of year when it raining, snowing, foggy, etc.
And then now, I only have one coin with me, as the rest are in the SDB (35 miles away). Fortunately, it’s a nice one, a Early Eagle, so it will probably keep me content until I can get a few more out of the bank.

To be fair, if collecting coins was primarily about scrolling through listings on eBay, I would be bored, discouraged, and out of the hobby.
That said, my interest in coins, while once very strong (2002-2012) and possibly unhealthy, has otherwise waxed and waned throughout my life, since I was about five years old. It competes with other interests and hobbies for my time and treasure. I doubt that I will ever be out of coins completely, but I think it is reasonable to take breaks, even for years at a time.
Lately I've been putting 99% of my hobby energy into US paper money and it's been great.
I would have to say no.
The problem is there aren’t many coins that have extreme eye appeal for sale that jump out at you and excite you to the point that you feel you must have that coin
On the same page as Robert. I only need three very expensive, hard to find coins to complete my type set. I live near a major show venue, and go there primarily to see people in the business I know, and to see / hold some neat coins that I will never own.

My collecting interests are extremely broad - I collect local and foreign, ancient mediaeval and modern. It's impossible for me to get "bored with it", since it's all so different.
I could imagine, if I tried to restrict myself to just one narrow field, that I'd quickly get bored with that field. But that's just me, and how I'm wired. I've never been a "gotta catch'em all" set-completer. Some other people, attempting to "collect everything" like I do, might quickly get frustrated and quit at the sheer amount of knowledge needed to even begin and/or at the sheer impossibility of ever "completing" the collection.
So my question, to the "bored collector" would be: why do you collect what you collect? Do you collect it out of personal interest, or do you collect it because that's what other people say you should be collecting? If it's your passion, it shouldn't be possible for you to get bored and stay bored. If it's not your passion, try and find another aspect of collecting that grabs your interest. There's no "right way" or "wrong way" to collect coins, just "different ways".

Yeah, I was on the verge of selling all of (or a lot of) my collection, and did sell a lot of coins that could be replaced if I ever wanted to, but ended up holding onto my more treasured ones and have been upgrading over the years. Good choice so far
I'm also a hobby rotator. Also changing focus in a hobby like this can freshen things up. I also don't get to shows or shops or clubs, so can relate to missing out on some aspects of the hobby. But I at least can read lots of material on a plethora of aspects of the hobby, or things adjacent to it, to immerse myself, or use forums, social media, for some community aspects.
Never. I’m always thinking about the next coin show I’ll be attending and what new treasure awaits me. As my local quarterly coin show approaches the 2 week mark, my anxious anticipation goes through the roof. I never get bored learning and viewing new coins I have never seen before. Collecting coins is a continuous process of learning and acquiring, something I hope I will always possess.
I've lost interest in most coins, but not those I still collect.
I still like reading about other collector's interest in what they collect though.
Reasonable approach but if I did that, someone else would buy the coins I want for my set first and then I might not have another chance to buy one resembling it.
Has a guy ever not gotten sick of a woman no matter how pretty she is from time to time? I like ladies more than coins, it is bound to happen. But the solution is the same, take a break and the itch will come back.
You’ll know you’re close to needing a break when the hobby (girls or coins) becomes more about the thrill of acquisition than the joy of possession.

Collecting coins is my main hobby. This forum is also part of that. I do pull out some of my coins from the safe from time to time.
It's not boredom but more like what else can you do but share them here and admire them. I try to read every post and learn and it's working out very well.
I do enjoy the research that's shared here on this forum as part of it. So many smart people in this hobby.
The PCGS app also has good commentary on certain years of Morgan dollars and WLH's. Actually all coins really.

I never get bored of coins. My finances have changed my purchasing of them though. I haven't bought anything the last 3 yrs now. Used to buy mint sets for my danscos but with the mints higher prices, that has stopped also. My collecting now resorts to pocket change searching. Lol But I still enjoy coins and being on the forum looking at others coins.

I get bored looking at coins that aren't the focus of my collection. Pennies aren't interesting.

But I'm growing weary of giving in to my compulsive desire to upgrade endlessly, for no real benefit. Which is why I'm pivoting to buying far fewer, much more interesting coins (in the guise of a "box of 20").
