Hobby Camaraderie - Met a Fellow Board Member for Lunch Yesterday!
Prior to the holidays, I noted that one of our very own members here, @calgolddiver, lived near me. I reached out to him via a PM and we agreed to get together. Well, we had lunch at a local BBQ joint yesterday and did a show and tell. What fun! He collects coins that I know nothing about and it was great to learn about his treasures and compare notes. We'll do it again someday and I felt like I gained a friend.
I'm sharing this story because it's so nice to connect with fellow hobbyists since, beyond this forum, who/where else can we share our passion about coins? My family has no interest. As such, it can become a isolated joy that, when shared, deepens one's enjoyment of the hobby. Yes, I know, I could join one of the local clubs and perhaps I'll do that.
I also had this experience at the FUN show having dinners with the likes of @spacehayduke, @ldhair, @BillJones, @Floridafacelifter, @DeplorableDan, and @FlyingAl (and seeing @winesteven on the bourse floor). It adds so much to the experience to meet other enthusiasts.
So, if you have introversion inclinations, make the effort to engage!

Great post and glad you had a fun coin day. As someone who is somewhat introverted also, I strongly second this statement! It's very easy to have a great time being sociable when one has a common interest.

I couldn't agree with you more. I have only met Gumby1234 and he's a nice fellow.
I agree with you that it does expand the joy of the hobby.
I understand your comment about the isolation. I have so many coins I would enjoy sharing with others in person.
This forum is where I find most of my enjoyment of the hobby these days.
Great post.

Who paid for lunch? Did they pay in ike dollars and JFK halfs? 🤔
I’ve said it many times, the friendships and connections we develop with others in the hobby are more important to me than the coins themselves. If I had to collect coins in a vacuum, I would pick a different hobby.

I have to agree with @Catbert. We had a great time sharing coin stories and getting to know each other. Of additional interest I actually have a coin with a @Catbert pedigree that I purchased on BST from another member @TomB. Amazing how the coin traveled across town through our numismatic interests. We will certainly continue our friendship and share more coins. I must say Dan blew me away from the share perspective (he brought two boxes and I had only 5 coins with me. So I owe him a trip to the SDB. The coin in question "...from the Catbert collection ...

I am a lifelong coin collector (at least as far back as I can remember). and never had any family or friends with whom I could share the hobby. When I finally married at 47, coins were not on my wife's radar. However, she took to it like a duck to water and now is as enthusiastic as I. I feel very blessed to be able to share my passion with someone whom I am passionate about. Life is good.
I have a few friends i would gladly trade for a few of your coins!
I was told the coins go or I do. Told her don't bother writing 😉
I’ll extend the invitation again….
When in Cincinnati, give me a shout.

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.
A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.
