Image seems to be a little out of focus, giving (me anyway) the appearance of rub, but I suspect it's MS.
The strike does it no favors, perhaps even slightly below average for this typically poorly struck date.
    I'll venture a guess of 63, shot 64.
I see too many tic marks, what may be impaired luster, and a prominent scratch along with some smaller scratches on the eagle.

Weak strike and in my opinion no higher than a 63

Typical obverse strike for this date... If the luster is all there (The image is tricky) I could see this coin being 64 but I would like to see a "professional" image... Because of the price boost this thing gets at 5 and up it takes a lot to get there... Need BOOMING luster, good surfaces.. the strike does not limit it (usually)...

This is a good lesson. The folds in the robe above the nine confused me — I assume that is rub, @Walkerguy21D ?

Edited, second set of pictures provided. I'd say MS64.

I need to learn to grade. I will continue to study up on it. The 1940S is a tough one. I read David Halls commentary on coin facts and will continue to compare and learn.
    Thank you.

I'm looking at the breast, hip, and right obverse field on the original images. And I THINK that is more of an illusion from the lighting and focus....

Also look at Hamm's images....even though they also a slightly out of focus, the cartwheel luster and mint bloom just jumps out - like a quick glance just screams MS.

    64

  • MFeldMFeld Posts: 13,879 ✭✭✭✭✭

The images are extremely difficult for me to interpret.
I'd considered a guess of AU58, as well as one of "cleaned". But I eliminated the AU58 guess, based on how clean the fields and rims appear to be.
While the images are still giving me problems, I'll go with a guess of MS63 and MS64 wouldn't surprise me.

To offer a fairer comparison, it would be much better to provide images of other examples of the same date.

I was not able to blow them up, but they appear to be well struck '41-S's with good meat on the branch hand. Nice coins.

I've learned from this thread that it's probably not a good idea for me to post raw images of my coins. I'm learning to grade. I feel I open myself up to being discouraged. I appreciate the responses very much thank you.

I agree with @relaxn, 1940-s halves are the worst!

I remember back in the day handling an original BU roll of 1940-s walkers with obverse strikes mostly even weaker than that of the OP’s, and all the coins had mushy centers on the reverse to boot. I couldn’t find a single coin in the roll that I thought was retailable or worth grading.

Mark Feld, You're right so I will post the only 2 40-S examples I have.
Morgan13 , Don't get discouraged. It's a learning process that takes some time.

Morgan13, my suggestion is to take advice and learn from those that provide commentary above and try not to be discouraged by it. There are a lot of knowledgeable Walker people on here, not to mention true pros like Mark Feld. Nearly all of them are only trying to be helpful and have no agenda other than to spread knowledge.
You posted a very difficult date. I collected Walkers for over 10 years and put together a pretty good set, but never found a 40-S that I liked.

Is this the same coin you just posted in another thread (GTG)?
Your coin definetly has that pancake look that's used to describe the 40S. No offense.
    What's the grade?

This is a different 40-S but came from the same batch of coins.

    It’s a MS66

@AlanSki I am not sure what you mean when you say "same batch".
    Isn't every coin different?
    Am I missing something here?
    Is it an NGC MS66?

I’ve been posting my other WLH. They all are from the same set.

  • Morgan13Morgan13 Posts: 1,350 ✭✭✭✭✭

@AlanSki you no doubt have some mice coins.
I believe I do too. Although my territory is typically Morgan's I am keeping all of these. I can't get good enough images to really show what these WLH look like but they are all beautiful and original. I'm keeping them. Once my Dansco album shows up they are going in it.
I started out collecting them because I think they are beautiful. I at first thought of selling some of them because what I bought is kind of an extended short set. Right now my feelings are to keep them.
