This is a J-189 (Ex: Bass) As US Patterns noted, this was the earliest gold pattern for a denomination unrelated to a gold dollar or double eagle and an example was offered in an auction as early as 1860. The obverse is essentially the same as the three cent nickel of 1865.

Here is one that is a bit more affordable. I bought this 1900 $2.50 when I was in high school circa 1965. It came from a camera and record store which had a coin board in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. NGC gave it an MS-62. I thought that it was a little better. This was the type coin in my eight piece gold set, which was in a Capital Plastics holder.

Thanks for sharing the backstory on the piece ...I find it much more interesting when there is a story with posted photos. I wish more of us would say more about the pictures of their coins.
