Worst True-View photos?

redraiderredraider Posts: 229 ✭✭✭✭✭

This is by far the worst Trueview I have. Overall the pic is very good, but they cut off the rims, making this coin look like it was struck on the wrong planchet! Its a Judd-299 graded PF65BN.

Anyone have coins with similar issues? I have to imagine that the sheer number of coins they photograph will lead to awkward or just bad photos every now and then.

That's a weird image. Was the coin shot raw? If shot through an existing holder, perhaps they were attempting to trim off the inner gasket.

Ouch....there is no way they will be proud of those photos! The rim is even cut off at the bottom of the reverse.

I had a similar post on the Registry blog a year or so back. However I was very fortunate that Phil had another image that they could use and swap it out. I do not think most can be as lucky.

I snagged the first image below with a white background (cert 50241558) in March 2011. It was in the EllenD (David Hall) Registry of Liberty Eagles. Mr. Simpson bought the collection. The coin was given a new cert 29583055 in March 2014, and the same image appeared with a background including cert number. I seem to recall the Liberty Eagle collection was certified with roughly consecutive 2958xxxx numbers. The images were less than representative.

Thankfully, DW( Jenna) was kind enough to give me a more representative image.

The 1940 Mercury dime and 1860 IHC (as well as the 1870 and 1871 IHCs, most likely) are not TrueView images, but are from the time PCGS used what they called "the Sniffer". If I recall correctly, PCGS would scan many coins while attempting to detect foreign substances applied to the surfaces or other alterations. These scanned images are sometimes loaded up with the cert number and folks mistakenly assume they are TrueViews. PCGS no longer uses this technology, as far as we know.
