Off Brand Holders to PCGS Crossover "Experiment" - The Coin Geek YouTube Channel

pointfivezeropointfivezero Posts: 1,854 ✭✭✭✭✭

Ben "The Coin Geek" posts a lot of educational content on his YouTube channel, often at his own expense. We decided to team up to create an off brand holder to PCGS crossover project. I "donated" several holders with low value coins to the effort and Ben submitted them to PCGS in the "any straight grade" crossover category. I was actually quite surprised at the results:

Not including the ungraded Global holders, there was a net nine grade point gain in the PCGS holders. This does not include the loss of the DCAM and DMPL attributes. All graded holders crossed to straight grades with PCGS:

Interesting, thanks. One thought I had, when you got these were you just getting them for the holder? Or on some did you look the coin over and decided that it was nice? The latter being a little more of a 'select group' of off brand holders.

These were all duplicates in my holder collection. The 13 Global holders with the 1881-S, I bought from Ben. I originally bought all of them for my off brand holder collection, now with over 100 inique brands.

Thanks, so it sounds like a more random selection of the off brand holders. :)

I'm not surprised at the ANACS/ANA and the Blanchard coins doing well as there are still some very nice coins in those holders. I am a bit surprised that the PCI photo cert style holders did that well, interesting experiment.

The slabs sent for crossover came from @pointfivezero . Ben made the video

    Fun experiment!
Did you ever figure out what was the issue with the Bugs Bunny 1955 Franklin? I didn't see anything wrong with it to prevent a straight grade.

As for all of the Coingeek vids on grading/crossing/crackouts/open box, I enjoyed this one, very informative.

I see to find PCI photo grade slabs as those had consistent grade increases.

One of the comments in the video said it was not a Bugs Bunny but I beg to differ. PCGS did not provide a reason for the failure to cross so it is anybody's guess.

Love the video, but I don’t consider ANACS to be an off brand grading service. You just have to be ok with your coins in pee-yellow holders :D. I’m also surprised that PCI graded that ASE MS65, there has to be considerable marks for such a grade.

Yes, the Paramount and the old ANACS ANA holder were higher end in their day. They were sacrificed for a good cause.

MS 65 was about as high as you would see back in the 1980s; occasionally you would see MS 67 but at one point that was basically like a 70 today. In general, there were 3 or 4 levels, MS 60, 63, 65, and sometimes 67.

It certainly looks like a Bugs Bunny to me from the video.
