I won this on GC Sunday night, and because of GC’s outstanding service, I have the coin in hand a mere 36 hours later.

Moffat coinage was one of the most, if not the most respected outfits of the pioneer gold era. Many other pioneer issues were not up to par in terms of purity and weight, however the moffat were right there with their federal counterparts, and as a result saw widespread circulation throughout the US. I have to check the Kagin McCarthy books later, but I’m pretty sure some of these were even found in circulation as far as the east coast, meaning that they had circulated across the country.

Most examples of this issue come with mushy details, weakly struck eagles, and grainy surfaces because of the deteriorated dies that had to be used. This particular example comes with exceptionally sharp design elements by comparison. The surfaces are almost prooflike, and the overall level of preservation makes this one a true condition rarity. CAC pop 3/4, this is the first 58cac to be offered in a public auction, and I wasn’t letting it escape me. I will likely cross this to either PCGS or CACG before it gets tucked away indefinitely. Enjoy!
