“Museum of (PCGS) Coin Holders” - Estimated Range of Original Cert Numbers for Each Type?
![winesteven](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/authoricons/12.jpg)
I see there’s a link on the PCGS website that provides many details, including date ranges, for each type/Generation of PCGS holder. Does anyone have the information of the ORIGINAL cert number range for each of those (or even a rough estimate)?
I recognize as collectors do certain things, like Reconsideration, the old cert number is retained in a newer generation holder, but I think it could still be useful having data on the Original cert number ranges for each generation of holder.
Thanks.
Steve

I was under the impression the cert numbers jumped all over the place and not sequential, except for an individual submission
Yup. They use random numbers rather than sequential numbers.

While there may be exceptions, the cert numbers used now are 48xxxxxx, and before that were 47xxxxxx, and so on. Around five years ago they were 36xxxxxx, and around 10 years ago or so, they were 30xxxxxx. A few years before that, when PCGS started using plus grades, the cert numbers used at that time at the beginning started with 25xxxxxx!
Thoughts, comments?

I decided my scheme wouldn't work due to lack of images.
I like the older holders. It’s an other layer of enjoyment for me with collecting. 👍

Unfortunately, I cannot be of any help with regards to the CERT numbers… But your observations are definitely interesting…
When I get a new coin, if it’s in a slab type that I don’t already have that is cool…

There are often several different ranges in use at the same time, for example the international locations. And when you get into samples, many of the #s used are reuse or aren't in the database.

As I indicated, yes, there are exceptions. But it would be nice if the ranges of the majority cert numbers used for a holder type can be roughly determined.

PCGS has historically used blocks of numbers, in my experience, and these blocks do not necessarily go sequentially. The blocks might also notate show graded coins vs. coins graded at PCGS facilities. Obviously, the type of insert can give us a date range for certification, but beyond that it gets a bit sketchy.

Somewhere between 2015 and 2016 my cert numbers jumped from the low 3xxxxxxx’s to the 8xxxxxxx’s then after a couple of submissions the certs reverted back to the 3xxxxxxx’s again.

The numbers have been erratic at times, but since 2007 have generally followed an upward path. It confirms Robec's observation that they deviated from that pattern in 2016. Looking back at my prior submissions, these are the first 3 digits. Most of my submissions have been in the second half of the year. I'm still waiting for my 2023 submission.
No news to add, other than I read here recently (not sure which post??) that in the Rattlers, the 913***** was the last number, and at least one guy out there was looking for 913***** Ratts.
I'd love to know if there was a source for Ratts . . . we all know of the 108s, but how does anybody know (or can verify) any other order of cert #s out there for Ratts??????? I.e. . . . . . . how would anyone know that the 913***** was the final Ratt, or would they?

Thanks so VERY much @Cocoinut!!!! This was exactly the type of information i was hoping to see.
Thanks again!

So I looked at many of my semi-older slabs. I only noted the 8 digit cert numbers. The reconsideration started around the first of 2013 (perhaps late 2012) so only re-holders were prior to that. My understanding is, if a 7 digit cert is placed into a newer 8 digit holder it would now have a leading zero and then the 7 digit cert and I did not note any of those. The certs seem to be a mix of numbers. I suspect if the actual millions of slabs could be listed it would show more.
Using the museum of holders code all the 4.0 (1998 - 2002) that I have are only 7 digit certs. However, their example is an 8 digit (they also note 4.1 had 8 digit).
Here are the beginning numbers of the certs.
4.1 (2002 - 2004) I have about a dozen with a few 21x and several 50x and one 400.
4.3 (2005) These are a good mix with a couple 10x and 22x each, then 191, 219, 502, 601.
4.4 (2005 - 2011) all of these begin with 1xx (11x to 14x).
4.5 (2011 -2013) just a couple at 25x.
4.6 (2012 - 2014) a few with 2xx and 5xx.
With the reconsideration starting the remaining could be recon's (or re-holder) or new numbers.
5.0 (2014 - 2015) 2xx and 3xx
6.0 (2015 to 2020) I have many and the numbers are mostly 2xx, 3xx and 8xx. Some, the 256 I submitted at this time.
6.1 (2020 to now) I submitted and got 371, 381, 459, and also have 407.
