Anybody collect the US Mint First spouse medals?

The series is very well done imho. The Presidents that weren't married had the medals done in classic designs of the time. These were very attractive in Bronze! Anyone remember them?? Anyone buy them when they were offered?

I have a couple of them, but they have never been a priority for me. The Thomas Jefferson Draped Bust piece would be interesting, but I have never seen one. I bought the gold piece, but the one I received was not nice.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I'm sure that somebody somewhere collects these. I dont have any and most likely never will.

They were hyped and actually actively promoted by a couple of larger coin firms when they were first issued but the effort faded quickly and quietly. Most medals issued in sealed plioform do not gain instant popularity.

I had a few years back. The 2013 and 2014 gained a large premium after selling out (based on eBay results, they still carry the large premium). They were not a part of my core set, so I sold all of mine (some more easily than others as the rest of the years were barely worth issue price).

It was a nice idea to do these as a less expensive complement to the gold coins. And there were some nice designs (especially the Liberty subset for those Presidents that had no spouse while in office).

I have one, Dolley Madison, to go with my empty holder. Figured I'd get the other pieces to make up the set. Now I need the gold version.

You are lucky you didn’t buy a gold version recently from the mint. They sell for melt. They have no numismatic value. The only one I have is the Jackie Kennedy piece. It goes well with the gold Kennedy Half Dollar.

It was a great poor man's alternative to the first spouse gold program, but the 2014 releases ruined it for me. I tried to get a set every Christmas, but the 2014 set was sold out before I got there. I have every medal but the 2014s and the Barbara Bush. I seem to always find better uses for my coin budget when I occasionally circle back to complete that Whitman album.

Has anyone ever seen official mintage figures for these medals?

I think I started buying these when they first came out. I might have the first 2 or 3 years and lost interest in them.

Bill, I have no intention of collecting them. It's purely a one-off. I found an NGC holder with no coin and a "Reserved for Dolly Madison" label.

On the proviso the "one is random, two is junk, three is a collection", and having a holder that accepts three NGC slabs...

    1. Empty
    2. Bronze Medal
    3. Gold NIFC Coin

Why did they make the empty holder?
