Is PSA Abandoning the Set Registry?

  • Hi PatriotTrading,
Those are great suggestions, regarding the social media and prizes. There will be a posting going out towards the end of the week which will touch upon these elements among other topics. We have been slow to pump up the Registry due to the large backlog (new sets/slots). Our processing is very manual and the team has been doing their best to keep up with the requests. We are getting closer to reopening again but in doing so, want to make sure we have the personnel and processes in place so as to avoid another shut down.

I really hope the frequent crashes for those of us who have a lot of sets will get addressed someday. It's really cumbersome. PSA doesn't appreciate the value the registry holds. I know there's less competition than ever these days but there are plenty of examples of companies who were on top of the world at one time and later found themselves out of business before they knew it.

Yesterday, I had 9 additional slots approved for the Ron Cey Master Set.
To my disappointment, all were added as "optional."
What? This makes no sense to me. This is the "Master Set" right?
All the cards I added, the same year and brand of cards are in other players' Master Set checklist.

This is quite the slap in the face to my efforts and cost to search out these cards and self submit them to be graded, only for the Registry to diminish my collection by omitting them from the MASTER SET and instead adding them as optional.
I'm really upset about this and this needs to be corrected.
Plus I have several other cards ready for submission that are also missing from the Master Set.
I have to wonder now if I should even bother.

There are dozens of things that can be done to improve the Registry as a whole to make the user experience much better.

Looking for a Glen Rice Inkredible and Alex Rodriguez cards

Are they things you have previously posted about? Or would you consider listing them here?

I’ve just completely stopped requesting slots at this point. I had been picking up cheaper cards of one player to add to their master registry set but decided to stop doing that since I have so many outstanding slots for higher end cards of the same player dating back 7 months. Given the last slots I had filled were all just given 1.00 weighting despite clear rarity and value of a few it’s just not worth the effort.

Also want to note I edited this to add I just took a look at the Ron Cey Master set and what a joke. All those new items are in fact listed as optional. The 1975 World Series Game 5 is especially ridiculous considering it’s from the regular flagship Topps set. Per Master set rules Cey is featured on the front of the card and also mentioned on the back of the card…not to mention I’m pretty sure I’ve seen sets Master Sets where this is ignored.

In fact the 1977 Orioles Team card is a perfect example of this. The Reggie Jackson Master Set contains this card. Reggie is in the team picture but his name is not mentioned on the back of the card.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some other team cards similar to this sitting in Master Sets for players. Many times in the 60’s pictures were reused for multiple years and you can barely make out who some players are in the photos.

My previous batch of slot requests, the 75 Topps MINI World Series was added, but when I went to add the "regular" 75 Topps card, it was added only optional. Makes no sense. And Topps stickers are in, but exact same O-Pee-Chee version out?

And I'm using the Steve Garvey Master Set as a comparison, where the Fleer Stickers and OPC Stickers and other oddballs are part of his set, but again, when I request to add to the Ron Cey Set, they are considered optional. And strangely, the Garvey set has cards outside his playing years as well.

If a 1982 ALL-STAR GAME PROGRAM INSERTS-HAND CUT is included in the Garvey Set, then my Cey card that I found, hand cut myself, submitted to PSA myself, which proudly got a PSA10, should DEFINITELY be in the Cey Master Set.

Out of the blue, PSA added a 52-Card Deck playing card of Cey. No stats or anything. Absolutely fine by me, but it certainly didn't meet the criteria laid out by PSA, so don't try to use that as an excuse to omit select cards from the Master Set.

I would think PSA would want fans of a certain player to be encouraged to seek out all his cards of playing years and get those cards submitted. Many of those slot requests were cards I self submitted. And this is the "Thank you for your business" I get.

I want to know my efforts are being recognized and the player is being properly represented.
This was a bucket list thing for me, but I've been completely discouraged to move forward on this project.

  • I asked the same question regarding new items being added as optional and this is the response I was given:

“In light of the 2024 PSA Set Registry Awards deadline, approved new slot requests will be processed as optional.

Once the deadline has passed, the items will become required and count towards completion & rating.”

So I am guessing from this response that any new slots added from this point until the registry awards deadline will be added as optional to their respective sets and once the deadline for awards has passed, their status will be changed to required. Now as to when they actually change their status is anyone’s guess

    Thank you for that!
I did just get an email yesterday about the awards deadline being May 31(which I didn't know) and it did make me wonder about any late changes to existing sets. They did just recently add over 50 new sets to the registry.
I hope you're right and the optional cards are then rightfully added.

  • Regarding the processing of new slot requests as part of inclusion into the SR awards period, the information provided is accurate. Once the awards period ends on 5/31, those changes would be come permanent.

I was a little upset there, but I'm better now.
At least I know now I can proceed with my project.

    Hi SR Members,
Just a reminder that there is a little over a month left to get your sets updated for inclusion in the Annual SR Awards consideration pool. On 5/31/24, we will close the award period and begin selecting the winners.

As an aside, regarding the posts ranging from the future of the registry to why newly created sets are defaulting to a weight of one, these will be addressed shortly.

Would they be awarding pins ? I love my pin !!!

Waiting on pins for 2023 awards…. that’s really unbelievable but unfortunately not surprising and in a nutshell, why there’s a thread that exists about whether psa is abandoning the registry. Just another piece in a long line of data that demonstrates regardless of how much psa pushes the registry and pays lip service about how it’s something they believe in that it’s really just an afterthought at best. CEO claims in 12/23 that 2024 will be a year of improvements and nothing as of this date. We get a post on 4/16/24 that by end of the week there will be a post addressing concerns mentioned and then, nothing.

Are they actually going to make all the items that were given new slots close the awards period no longer optional and actually part of the sets?

    It’s well past 5/31z
Everything I had added around that period is still showing as optional in player master sets. I’ve had a few slots added to player sets in the last week or so and those new slots are not being put in as optional but are actually slotted as part of the set.

  • Prices would drop ..the set registry = higher prices

  • I don't understand why this process is so manual, so much could be automated, from creating new sets for players and team, to automatically adding graded cards to the player/team sets. I wanted to add cards to player sets today and I just get error page, please send e-mail.... very frustrating. Looks like all the sets have been tagged with 2024, but the awards page hasn't been created, still 2023? I look at the new sets created, some of them don't even have active participants? They could have a screen interface and let people add new sets themselves, including the cards required and card number for validation.

They just changed the 9 optional cards into part of the Ron Cey master set for me, plus they added the 5 new slots I submitted, and added 1 new slot on their own, a Hostess complete box. The Hostess handcut single and handcut panel were already part of the master set, but they now added the complete box.

So they're working on it. Did they get to yours yet?

As much as I enjoy the registry, it going away would be a good thing, specifically for vintage commons and semi-stars, for the reason you mentioned

Noticeable that in prior years, master player set registry compositions would accept team cards that did not list all of the names on the back, despite that not being consistent with the stated qualifications. Over the past year or so, there has been a shift in this policy, such that team cards are no longer added to compositions when the player is in the group shot but not all names on back. I'd prefer if they would add them as optional items (rather than required items), instead of just rejecting inclusion, but that does not appear to happen anymore. I might be in the minority here, but I feel like the optional items section on Master Set compositions makes for an interesting place to include those types of cusp items for collectors/participants without forcing others to chase them.

Hi RainbowRichards, thanks for posting about new set request reopening...

I also want to address some of the sentiment being raised regarding the broader support for the PSA Set Registry. Without addressing each item explicitly, in general, they are all valid gripes. At the core, the tools we use to facilitate the creation of sets, slots, etc. have reached their bounds of usefulness. They were initially built with an anticipated level of usage and when the registry exceeded this, starting in the pandemic, they could no longer keep up. We are only now getting around to revamping them. Not trying to dismiss the complaints, but there are reasons. I have provided a more formal response but in short, PSA is not abandoning the Set Registry.

The PSA Set Registry was launched in 2001 with the intention of adding structure to the collecting of PSA graded items. Through features such as inventory management, comprehensive checklists, market pricing, set rankings and others, the SR has grown to over 300k sets and 85k members. Making it one of the most successful platforms within the industry. As the SR matured, it became a place to not only compete along sets but a forum to meet collectors with shared interest. At its core, is the community. We have heard numerous stories where comradery was developed through competition and lasting friendships made. For all its accomplishments, the SR has continued to operate in the same manner through growth, both in members, sets and technical capacity.

Since the Pandemic, like many other areas of the hobby, the SR has seen its own surge in engagement. As collectors rediscovered and spent more time with their items, the stress placed on both the technical infrastructure and SR administrators increased. The technical platform which the SR is built has not kept up with the latest technology. Many of the errors, time outs and general slowness of the application are due to legacy tech. This also extends to internal tools the team utilizes to facilitate various activities like new set/slot requests and transfer of ownership requests. A credit to administrators past and present, who behind the scenes, have tirelessly worked to maintain the Registry. Unfortunately, the SR has more recently had the distinction of being known for its challenges than successes.

During the past few months, the SR team has been working to find ways technically and operationally to remedy as many of the issues faced. A long term overhaul of the technical platform is coming and this will place the SR on solid footing for years to come. In the near term, you may have noticed some of the typical latency or unresponsiveness, when you interact with the site, has improved. The engineering team was able to make some technical updates to enhance this area in the near term.

I appreciate you posting this. I have been a strong supporter of the Set Registry basically since its inception, and I have always enjoyed using this tool...up until the last 4 or so years, that is. It seemed as though PSA was just keeping the lights on, and now I know why. I very much look forward to the revamped tool. Any idea when it might launch?

I can’t wait to see how this comes out. I asked for a new set about 2 years ago and still nothing but it’s probably my fault. Not exactly sure I did it right so I’m hoping when new things roll out it will be easier to suggest a new set. Love the set registry and can’t wait to see where it goes.

As posted on the set request page (https://www.psacard.com/psasetregistry/setrequests) - questions can be sent to this email address (setregistry@collectors.com) to inquire about your 2-year-old set request.

I personally have submitted set requests within the past 12 months - and while it took literally months to be completed, they were all completed eventually.

Yeah I was trying to request a team decade set. There was already one for the Steelers 70’s and 80’s decade. Wanted one for the 60’s and eventually the 50’s. Wasn’t sure if I needed to list every single card by year or just give them the year since those are already established. I just gave them what years to add so I guess maybe that wasn’t the right way. Maybe I do need to give them each player for each year.

Thanks for the update setregistryofficial. As one of the original registry participants, I'm glad it isn't going away. I must have registered my first set right at the beginning as it was in the spring of 2001. At the time there were only sets like 1952 Topps and I don't think any were complete. I took a lot of flack for registering a 1969 Topps baseball set with all those commons posters said would be worthless.

Do you have a timeframe on when these upgrades will be implemented? I've seen promises of an upgrade for several years now. I've had timeout issues for the last 10-15 years.

I hope PSA will also focus more effort on vintage grading standards. My last two submissions have been my worst ever followed by my best ever. Fixing the registry software is key but also having a consistent treatment of vintage submissions only builds confidence in us vintage collectors. Even though PSA lacks serious competition these days, it won't be in PSA's interest to have collectors lose faith due to unpredictable grades and registry software problems.

Finally, a note of gratitude. Thanks for the grading coupon. It's hard to build sets at $16-17 a pop. This small gesture shows PSA still cares.

  • Hi Everyone,
Addressing a few of the comments and I have one request of my own...

    • The timing of Set Registry changes are planned to be live by end of H1 2025. However, there may be some smaller changes we will be implementing prior. Two of the areas we are focusing on is faster processing time for new set and slot requests, in addition to processing the backlog accumulated during the pandemic. I'll keep the group posted.

    • Glad to hear the vintage card special was well received.

    • Are there other channels (websites, blogs, social media, etc) which set registry members participate? We are looking to expand our communication outreach and would be very appreciative for recommendations.

    • There are some specific member/set questions and I'll respond directly.

The registry is a hell of a drug ! Not having a registry is why SGC could never compete with PSA
