Crossover and Restoration

If I submit a coin for crossover and restoration. does it cross first then go back for restoration? How does that process work?

There is a crossover service and then a restoration service.

Crossover you can 'control' the minimum crossover grade by filling out that box on the form. If the coin will not meet the minimum grade specified, then it will not be cracked out and returned as is. Here is a page to crossovers. There is also information on the pdf form.

Restoration - PCGS will make an initial evaluation of the coin in the holder. If they think it is a candidate for restoration, then they will crack it out of the holder. It is now essentially considered a raw coin. There is no grade guarantee. The coin will be restored and then sent for grading. It could still come back Details or a numerical grade. Here is a page for restoration.

On this page in the Eligibility and Requirements is this:

Coins graded by other third-party grading services may be submitted, only if you authorize PCGS to remove the coin(s) from their holder following the initial evaluation of the coin(s). Coins removed from other third-party holders do not qualify for a grade guarantee. You indemnify PCGS from any damage that may be done to the coin(s) during this process. You also acknowledge that some coins may have problems that are not apparent until removed from their holder.

There is similar information on the pdf form (section 6).

You might be able to send it to the current TPG for restoration and then to PCGS for crossover. Or send for crossover first and if it crosses over, then send it back to pcgs for restoration since it would then have the grade guarantee as it is now in a pcgs holder. It still may or may not qualify for restoration after the initial evaluation.

Why not just crack the coin out of the old holder and send it in for restoration and grading? This will save you the guarantee fee PCGS charges on crossovers.
