Lots of Red on the 1792 No Gold Set

Dabigkahuna, Myself, and the Young Numismatic have been trading places in the #6, 7, & 8 positions. The Cameron is holding onto the lead, but I'm looking for a trick or two to pull out of my sleave.... If the cert database would recognize my coins it would be of great help.

  • It looks like another race! First Full Step Jeffersons, now 1792 No Gold. Dabigkahuna pulled ahead of me over in the complete set image I see Keith D has a big want list over in the B/S/T forum, this after adding his neat Morgan.

The complete set is looking pretty daunting to me now. I need to focus on one set. I want to work on many! Should I upgrade my 20'Th Century mixed? Add to my 20'Th Century proof? Quickly buy up several circulated 19'Th century type coins so I can momentarily jump back past Dabigkahuna? Finish my Cal Gold mini type set?

I love that set, and have been stagnating at #11 while I concentrate on my Mercs. My rate of acquisition has slowed on those, so if I can't find nice Mercs, I may have to resort to buying type. I could finish the 20th Century type set quite inexpensively (mostly modern coins needed there), which would allow me to focus on the 1792-1964 set...... along with the Mercs, of course. image It looks like a good, competitive set.

  • Brian,

You make it sound like we are track side at the Kentucky Derby or maybe Daytona! imageimage

There no sneaking up on you guys!!image

I just got back about a half dozen of MS NGC coins that I cracked out and sent in to PCGS. The results were horrible. All the coins came back at least two grades lower than NGC or in a body bag. OUCH!!!image The worst part is I know I will do it again! LOL! Is there any cure?

  • It is alot of fun to work on. My sets don't compare to your guys at all, since many of mine are lower grades. I am in college and less money is available to buy MS coins. I have found that VF-AU have alot of detail and priced right at my level. How high will you jump with your sleve tricks?

I want to work on my 1792 set and finish the last two SLQs of my 1900-2000 set. Luckily, one of the SLQs is also needed for the 1792 set. It is daunting to try and do in a respectable grade... I can't too buy many coins a year at $300-400 a pop.

    Keith,

I'd like to have some nice gold coins in my set, but most of them look pretty banged up until you get to MS64 and above, and then the prices are high on all but the $20 Saints. If I can complete the non-gold set in the grades I'd like, I may attempt the gold, but I hate to buy coins I don't like (MS63 or lower) just to satisfy a registry requirement. Besides, I've just never cared much for the color of gold coins, and I can find a lot of coins in other metals that are more esthetically pleasing to me than gold.
