Crazy what some will pay for toning:

Personally I would not pay any premium but to each their own.

I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
I was tempted to buy the 1888 Guatemala Peso but never saw it in hand. A dealer-friend bought it so still have a shot

I just followed the auction for some coins from Costa Rica, Guatemala and in specific El Salvador LOT #23378 Republic Provisional Real 1835 AU Details (Gouged) PCGS.

Just to have an idea of the market about recent coins that I bought.
Top coins bring top prices:

While I did not see that coin personally in hand, I did hear from one of our mutual acquaintances, with in hand pictures to compare, that the toning was quite funky, dark with an overall neutral to negative eye appeal. This is what a colorful trueview can do I guess.

A - Nearly $10K for a MS63 CIII Lima 8R, even if it was the world's absolute most attractive piece for the grade (whether perfectly original frosty white or gorgeous tone, whichever you'd prefer), is gosh darn tootin' near insanity.
Top grade CIII Lima have gone for increasingly strong money the past 5 or so years, but this was... wow. And then $5K for a CIIII, which are more available (moreso the 1800s dates, but still)... in a 62? Granted, looks rather mark-free for 62 and attractive toning (clearly pops much more on the TV pic, so who knows)... but wow again.
B - Specifically regarding the tone on the 1781, @Boosibri, I think the Heritage's photo definitely shows that. Look at that right field into the the nose/mouth... that's getting close to environmental damage.
OK, can anyone explain this to me... a decidedly "meh" Lima Diego star 2R for $2300 w/BP???!!!! Doesn't look like D over X or anything else interesting - am I missing something?

Someone beat me out of the Guatemala Republic medal by $425.
Most frustrating having lost the Gil Proclamation medal by only $50.

Was able to pick up my first Argentina 8R, a coin I've wanted for a long time. Most of the competition for these was focused on the ones in higher grades.
I agree with you, crazy price! I’m glad I kept my UNC 2R D/X and D. I sold my dups D and D/X in the last summer FUN show in decent condition for around 1500 for the pair. Didn’t expect they would bring these prices
