I’ve been watching this type at auction ever since I moved to VA three years ago, and that’s probably the most fully ‘red’ Virginia 1773 1/2p I’ve ever seen! Nice coin.

30+ years coin shop experience (ret.) Coins, bullion, currency, scrap & interesting folks. Loved every minute!

Makes you wonder where that was tucked away for so many years.

Friend of mine had one just like that a few months ago, same grade but it was beaned and in an older white holder. Was yours reholdered recently?

It is pretty and I don't pretend to know anything about Colonials... but just what the heck is on the cheek, hair curl, neck & bust?
    Is that not wear?

It is a hoard coin. They were struck just before the Revolutionary War, and significant number of them ended up in a keg, unissued. I have heard that the number was 700 pieces or more.

You do see well circulated examples now and then, but it’s rather unusual.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

This coin was in a private collection (I have posted some of the other coins) for 40+ years. Was not slabbed before.

I’m going to guess long term contact with an old paper envelope caused the high point darkening, similar to this large cent:

This coin was from the New York Bank hoard, i’m sure there’s been a post or 2 about these.
I bought this coin raw in a frame with a display/story about the hoard. I won the coin in an auction from the UK

Wow, that one is really well struck. Very nice!

Don't see them red like that very often! Very well executed design, too
