I didn't vote because it depends on the coin and a lot of other variables for that matter.

I’m working through my collection to cull some stuff and turn it into a coin or two over $1000.
Is there a price threshold in weakening markets (if that’s what we’re in)? I would think that more valuable (and established) coins might fair better in those times. I think I’m still under water on some $300-400 stuff from like 2006. Maybe it’s be worse if I’d bought better coins?

Not unless it’s a very good coin at a very good price.

I voted no, however, I do think it is a good time to be a picky buyer with any coin over $250.

If it's a coin I "need" and the quality is there I'll buy it, even if we are at a peak market.

You buy what you want/need when it comes available. Same as it ever was for any antique.

Not at all, the problem is finding the coins I need, I'll always find a way to pay for it :)

I'm actually very suprised with the polling result. At posting time, "yes" only has 4%. I know this board is skewed toward those who submit, buy, and sell expensive slabbed coins, but I would have guessed a 30% to 70% yes/no split.

I'm one of the 2 who voted yes. Waiting on the market crash.

Interesting, but if this forum consisted of only high dollar coin collectors
that are very smart in their field instead of practical people'that also add excellent input this forum would cease to exist (jmho)

Now there are 3 of us.

    But I don't expect a crash.

Instead, my crystal ball predicts a gradual decline in prices over the next few years -- especially in my sub-$3k range.

Another poll with an impossible question. $1000 price or guide price?

There are $25 coins that aren't worth buying at $25 and $10,000 coins that are definitely worth buying.

And regardless of future value, there are coins you may not get another chance to buy for a generation.

  • jfriedm56jfriedm56 Posts: 1,358 ✭✭✭✭✭

No. At a local show yesterday I purchased 5 coins, one below PCGS price guide, two right at pg and two over guide. Through experience, I know if I didn’t buy them then, I wouldn’t have the chance again. The market is coming down in some areas, but not crashing. I will post pictures and TVs in the near future.

Bad time? What coins? Does this infer it's a good time to buy bullion or always a bad time? Why is the tipping point $1000? Will the market rise or fall due to world events?

Few, if any, if the coins I collect are under $1000.

I am still waiting for the Double Eagle market to correct and get some of this for $700-800 like in the early 2000s.

Yes surprised by the low yes answers. I watch this guys blog on utube - tracking the doomsday plane, updates in the Mideast war, tracking activity nuclear war command planes in air (more than usual), and selling survival food (nuclear war stockpile prep). Then the USS Ohio (Boomer) moved to that region. Enough firepower - decapitate Iran. Their foreign minister threatening us on our own soil. I Keep watching bullion prices - maybe time buy some more bullion material.

On that note, I'm guessing I'm not the only on here who has paid mad money to buy a coin that hadn't been offered in several years. Like more than double the guide price.

I just went triple price guide in an auction on a very scarce coin in acceptable but not good condition...and lost.

That's because public polls are pretty useless for any information.

I think it's a time to be selective and price conscious at all levels, as we should always be, but sometimes are not.

If you've done your homework and know what you want, and are paying attention to the trends, it might be a BETTER time to consider some higher priced coins than it has been over the last 18 months.

Good coins should not go begging, but new records should not be set over and over and over again for the same issue (or even the same coin!) in the span of months or a year.

    my 2c ... YMMV

I think eye appealing, CAC stickered and red book coins will continue to do well but separate themselves from the common stuff.

Coins will be less “liquid” as folks will all be more selective and maybe buying fewer coins overall.

The only reasons why one might not buy coins that cost that much would be (i) you don't have the money, or (ii) you think the market is about to tank.

If you don't have the money, don't buy the coins, obviously.

But nobody can "time the market." Any market. In addition to which, if you're in this game for the investment value, it's a bad business plan (there are lots of safer, surer ways to invest money).
