Good early american coinage replicas?

Does anyone know if there are any places that make or sell good quality restrikes of early american pre-1800 coins and patterns? The stuff from China are horrible.

Personally I'm looking for a half disme and one disme patterns to display, as there's no way I have a million bucks lying around. I wish Carr made some restrikes of these.

I think moonlight mint makes the best ones but I can never time it so I can get one from him. I don’t like paying the markup from eBay so I don’t have as many as I want.

I like his designs but I wish the copy wasn’t so conspicuous. If he made it smaller and incorporated more into the design or only on one side it would be more aesthetically pleasing to me.

Those are pretty nice. Agree with the copy though. Maybe a privy mark size?

    But dang no disme replicas.

    Also thanks for the welcome!

The Hobby and Protection Act determines the size of the word COPY. Follow the rules or get spanked!

    vegas baby!

    Here it is:
    (a) An imitation numismatic item which is manufactured in the United States, or imported into the United States for introduction into or distribution in commerce, shall be plainly and permanently marked “COPY”.

    (b) The word “COPY” shall be marked upon the item legibly, conspicuously, and nondeceptively, and in accordance with the further requirements of these regulations.

    (1) The word “COPY” shall appear in capital letters, in the English language.

    (2) The word “COPY” shall be marked on either the obverse or the reverse surface of the item. It shall not be marked on the edge of the item.

    (3) An imitation numismatic item of incusable material shall be incused with the word “COPY” in sans-serif letters having a vertical dimension of not less than two millimeters (2.0 mm) or not less than one-sixth of the diameter of the reproduction, and a minimum depth of three-tenths of one millimeter (0.3 mm) or to one-half (1⁄2) the thickness of the reproduction, whichever is the lesser. The minimum total horizontal dimension of the word “COPY” shall be six millimeters (6.0 mm) or not less than one-half of the diameter of the reproduction.

    (4) An imitation numismatic item composed of nonincusable material shall be imprinted with the word “COPY” in sans-serif letters having a vertical dimension of not less than two millimeters (2.0 mm) or not less than one-sixth of the diameter of the reproduction. The minimum total horizontal dimension of the word “COPY” shall be six millimeters (6.0 mm) or not less than one-half of the diameter of the reproduction.

I like the GMM items because you can get the coin with COPY of either side. I buy one of each and can display two coins without COPY on the side facing forward. The workmanship is outstanding.

If I recall correctly, they were produced with COPY on only one side and you could request the side you wanted it on.

Maybe the older ones. When I looked at his site the other day both sides had it. But maybe it was just the ones I looked at.

I believe you are misinterpreting the images. He often places multiple coins next to one another and sometimes pairs up the obverse and reverse sides that do and don't have COPY.

Ah, I bet you’re right. It wasn’t clear at a casual glance.

I bought this one when I could not afford the type. Frankly, I got no joy out it. As they say about tied football games between two great teams, "it was like kissing your sister." Gallery Mint made a "1796 Proof set" which interested me at one time. I am glad I didn't buy it, although it might melt for more than the issue price now.

@BillJones Use the half dollar as a pocket piece! Making it a choice AU would make the coin much more unique, hopefully increasing the appeal to you. I am currently working on a 1794 cent, going to try to bring it down to XF.

No, wear or no wear, it won’t make any difference. If seeing the Draped Bust design on a struck piece makes you happy, great! For me, there is no fun unless it was made back in the day.

Unless like me you want a disme...

  • Seraph21Seraph21 Posts: 50 ✭✭✭

I found an excellent counterfeit/restrike of a one disme on etsy (and bought one). It has the correct diameter, and doesn't have that wonky eagle you see in the 1oz silver rounds that use the same design. It seems like the design was well transferred.

Can we get close-up pics of both sides of your coin?
