variety service

For something like this:

1872 1C Shallow N FS-901, BN (Regular Strike)

Do I have to pay extra for a variety service, or is this considered recognized and will be slabbed as such at base tier cost?

You have to pay for the variety designation to be included on the insert.

If the variety has a FS designation, yes, there is a fee for that.

If it is in the Red Book, no fee is required as a Major Variety.

FWIW, I use Coinfacts as a reference.

In this case, start with the base coin number in the 'pop report'.

    Link

Then select the "base" coin number (i.e., PCGS #2103).
Finally, select "Show Related Coins and Varieties".

    Link

If your coin is under the "Major Varieties" heading, there is no variety fee.
Conversely, if your coin is under the "Die Varieties" heading, which it is in this case, there is a variety fee.

When I saw "variety service" in your title, I thought of this:

If you pay for variety service, they might remove the variety and not honor it later...so there is that.

Shallow N is not at risk for being "removed" as a variety. It is actually listed in the Red Book but only as a Footnote. I thought perhaps that made it on the level of a major variety but apparently I am wrong.

I just got my two varieties back from John and am quite pleased with the result.

I'm pleased with mine as well. My only wish would be to have them sonically-sealed.
