One of the more outstanding auctions last night at Heritage's regular Tuesday/Wednesday coin auctions.

Last sold on October 2015 for $4,230

PCGS Price Guide: $2,100
Mintage: 20

I wonder why PCGS has such a low price in the guide......truly not even close.

One of the prettiest U.S. gold coins out there.

Still looks nice! And a lot more expensive than my MS64 piece I have. Sure wish I could afford some of the proofs (without sacrificing my regular issues)!

Difficult to distinguish between proof and PL in that series. And in that condition, I would say why the price guides are the way they are. But someone or some people have no problem with that fact.

Most of the collectors who buy the old Proof gold coins are well off. They want to collect pieces that are at least PR-63 if not higher. In PR-55, this piece is an orphan. The serious collectors want something better. A guy like me, who wants a representative Proof gold dollar, wants something better.

I would not want money tied up in this piece. The fact the Proof mintage is 20 pieces does not change my opinion. I have an 1883 in PR-65, Cameo, CAC.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
