asheland’s latest NEWP ~ 1883 shield nickel

ashelandasheland Posts: 23,613 ✭✭✭✭✭

Believe it or not, I have never owned a shield nickel before! :o

Usually I would just wait and go with a higher example. The MS 65 is not that expensive, but this was offered to me right at wholesale and it just looked so darn nice I couldn’t pass it up… :D I think it’s a nice humble example.

    Congrats!

I’m not a big fan of Shield and Liberty nickels. I don’t particularly care for the design but yours is very nice looking.

I typically agree with that, I'm not big into nickels either, but I'm causally doing a general type set and this was nice and original enough to fit the bill. It was only $180. I got the V nickel a month or so ago, honestly I don't recall if I even made a thread or not. I'll post it here in a minute. this can be the official nickel thread! :D

My favorite is pre33 gold and Indian Head Cents, those really get me excited! :)

You could go for an 1883 Shield and 1883 V NC and 1883 V Cents and have all 3 circulating types for the year.

    That's something I would entertain...

To me, the coin in your slab photos looks a LOT more eye appealing than the “Not So” TrueView.

Separately, I really like the luster and strike of your V nickel.

Nice pickups for your Type Set.

I agree my slab shots show the color and luster a little more accurately, I do like the Trueview just for high definition, close-up of the die cracks and all that stuff but yeah that’s why I like to have both. 👍

The 83 N/C Nickel is inexpensive. You'll have to pay more for the 83 W/C. Both are cheap in MS 63.

IMO, nickel is not as shiny/lustrous as silver. It's more subtle with a softer glow effect than silver unless the fields are SPL or PL which will reflect more light. The level of luster on the OP,s coin is the only aspect I can see keeping it from grading higher. Do the cgc's take this into consideration or do they hold all denominations to one set of grading standards? The copper cent is even more different than nickel and silver. But the 1889 post appears more lustrous and has garnered a one-point higher grade. Knowing this, seeking lustrous Jefferson nickels is the sole reason how i could browse through a dealer's catalog of Jeff coins in a matter of seconds. I've learned early on that I had little interest in dull nickels. Unless, of course, l could make a dime on them.😉
But for a 140-year-old nickel, it's a very nice example.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

My understanding is that the luster is holding it back indeed, plus some hairlines. As far as bag marks, it has very few.

My V-Nickel pictured above has many bag marks, yet is higher and I can only attribute that to its incredible luster.

  • @asheland nice pick up
