Auction Personal Notes
![JimW](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/userpics/331/nZ3IWPPD7LDIF.jpg)
Most reputable auction sites have an option for one to add a 'personal' note, e.g., I often use the feature to keep track of my impressions of the coin, bid I might be willing to put in, etc. Do you think this information is used in some way by the auction house? Not trying to imply some sort of conspiracy is going, but seems like this info could be valuable from a marketing perspective or ??? Seems like something could be gleaned when say 10000s of notes are analyzed? A related question - is that a feature most forum members tend to use, or do you not for some reason? Thank you for your perspective smile:

I do personally use it because it helps me remember things I like and dislike about a coin as I revisit the site. I wouldn’t be surprised if that is a thing auction houses are doing to gauge bid estimates/general marketing purposes. But one has to wonder if that’s best use of their time to sift through 10s of thousands of personal notes on individual coins when say maybe someone like @MarkFeld time could be utilized otherwise. Again these are all assumptions and I would love to hear what more informed members than I have to say. Great topic!
I have no idea if the auction house uses that information but I certainly hope not as I use the notes field to note my max bid for that item.
Joe.
I use that feature all the time (but unfortunately Stacks does not provide for that). The slightly paranoid side of me tries to keep me from adding my last few seconds max bid intention, in addition to my other notes, but the logic side of me says it’s ok, since they would never use that info in any nefarious way. That logic side wins out - imagine if they were doing that, and then an ex-employee made that public! That would destroy their reputation. Their reputation is their most valuable asset, so they would never risk that!

If the terms and conditions allow this, I'd presume the worst-that they are looking at and using this information. May not even be true for most customers, but it's available to them and one should probably act accordingly.
If it worries you, then lie. Write down a number that is wrong in a way that you know and they don't, like put a 9 in front or multiply by 10 or whatever.
Practically speaking I bet they have better things to do than trying to misuse that info.
You must be fun at parties.
There's no way to use this information commensurate with the risk to your reputation. A note to myself to bid no more than $10k is not the same as a $10k bid. I could easily change my mind, just be speculating etc.
I like the feature as while I'm browsing quickly, I can do a quick price look up and comparison, and determine my highest bid and put that in the notes, otherwise on other sites I have tow rite it on a sticky note and remember where I put it. In the end bidding I can see what my note was without redoing the research or finding my notes elsewhere. It's very convenient.
As for how the auction house may or may not use it? I really don't care. I care how I use it. If they can glean some important information to make their platform better or advertise better or some such, I'm all for it.

Great thread topic, it will be interesting to see the comments and opinions.
I myself use it very seldom, and prefer personal notes, but here and there I jot down some random note.
I often wonder if this information was seen and used by others.
I still list the coin’s value, my bid limits and any other pertinent info.
I usually list information up to 3 weeks in advance. This feature helps me stay up to date prior to the coin going under the hammer.

Kennedys are my quest...
Same here - as hammer time approaches I already pretty much have a plan and why (or why not)!

I have used it, but only to list PCGS prices and CAC prices of the coin. I do not put down what I intend to bid as I've wondered if the auction house could use it nefariously.

I use auc notes w my auc bidding - MV, eBay seller price, pop, my max bid, etc. I have no idea if the auc house sees this or somebody else. If using AS have similar notes - CDN bid, CPG, CF, etc. Certainly would not want owner or other bidders see it! These notes critical in the bidding process.
Never used that feature myself, not worried about it but never felt it would be useful to me.
