I purposely waited until this auction ended, but is this really an SMS coin?
And, in case the link stops working:

It looks strictly proof to me.

Best you suck ever?
To my thinking, the OP coin is a standard 1964 Proof and doesn't seem to have any of the SMS diagnostics. Of course, as always I could be wrong.
I don’t understand why ANACS labeled the coin both “Proof” and “SP”. Mechanical error? Still, at least they didn’t label it “SMS”, which it’s clearly not.

Definitely not a 1964 SMS. And the price reflects that nobody was fooled by ANACS' gaffe with the specimen designation

"Coin collecting for outcasts..."
It's a mechanical error.
SP= Specimen not SMS
BHNC #203
Part of the confusion is because PCGS grades SMS coins as SP.

but a bigger GreatCollections error calling it SMS
While that sounds correct, the coin looks to be a Proof, not a “Specimen”.
@daltex, the thread title could use an edit for purposes of accuracy.

The buyer can contact Customer Service and return it to ANACS and we will fix it free of charge, unless they just want to have a mechanical error in their collection. Of course, we'd prefer to fix it lol.
So you're the one who outbid me.![B) B)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/sunglasses.png)
Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value. Zero. Voltaire. Ebay coinbowlllc
I thought the Type 1 Kennedy Proof was the Accented Hair. This doesn’t have the truncated “I” diagnostic of the AC.

The label is referring to reverse design RDV-001, the straight G in the designer's initials. I emailed @ANACSPAUL about this and suggested we use RDV-001 since 'Type 1' is confusing.
Agree, when I read through this the only SMS I saw was in the GC description - mechanical error and all.

Done.
I agree, but I was replying to the title not the label being wrong

There are 3 die combinations for 1964 proof 50c.
(1) Accented Hair Obverse, TY1 Reverse
(2) Non-Accented Hair Obverse, TY1 Reverse
(3) Non-Accented Hair Obverse, TY2 Reverse
The "TY1 Reverse is also known as the "Straight G Reverse" Two differences between these reverses are:
(a) For TY1 Reverse, the right side of letter "G" in FG is straight with no serif, and the ray in the second star on the right is interrupted as it pass through the stars.
(b) For TY2 Reverse, the right side of letter "G" in FG has a serif, and the rays pass through the stars un interrupted as they pass through the stars.
Note: A common pick up point used for Accented Hairs is the bottom left serif of letter I in LIBERTY is incomplete. Always check the hair to confirm the hair is accented. There is a variation of the Non-Accented die where the serifs (i.e., both left and right sides) of letter I in LIBERTY are incomplete to some extent. Hence, it may "seem" to be an Accented Hair if this pickup point is used.
