A couple new PCGS Morgans. GTG? Grades revealed

About 4 months ago I had a friend submit a couple of Morgan Dollars to PCGS for me. The coins came back on Saturday.

1887 VAM 14? Can anyone confirm? MS66 This is one time the coin looks nicer in person than the TrueView

1899-O MS64

A little more information. Both coins were cracked out of ANACS holders.

64 on the top, 65 on the bottom is my guess. Both really nice! The obverse scuffing on the upper cheek and the hit on the reverse above the eagle's head holds the 99-O back from 66 IMO.

    65 top coin

66+ bottom coin (a really nice example)

Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

    64 and 65
…they look even nicer than that but I’m hedging a bit based on the TrieView photos sometimes hiding a few things

First blush, before I read responses and before I saw the old ANA grades

    64, 64

I’m slightly puzzled why ANACS graded the 1899-o as a 62? Normally they’re not wildly conservative, so what am I missing?

64,64 Both very nice. Agree with 1madman as to why only a 62. But without coin in hand, can’t tell.

A 2 point upgrade for each. Nice job although I disagree with 66 grade in the 87. Maybe its much nicer in hand.

I guess the dip or MS70 to the 87 did it well with 2 point upgrade, although it did look like a 65 already in the ANACS holder.

I can see a 66 on the 1887. This was my description: 1887 ANACS MS64. A term I don't use very often is PQ++, but this one is definitely PQ++! I went through a dealer's inventory of over 100 Morgan dollars the other day, and picked out two coins. This was the very best of his inventory. The coin has a very clean cheek and FEW marks for a 64!

I did nothing to the coin. Just cracked it out of the ANACS holder and submitted it.

Did PCGS do conservation on the coin? How did the toning disappear that is reflected in the ANACs holder?

No. I think the difference is due to imaging techniques.

Wow, I know folks call them glamour shots but making toning disappear seems a stretch. If I bot the coin with that photo, I'm expecting a nearly white coin. Still has slight toning on the reverse near ONE and on the wreath but no where near the ANACs photo. If I wanted a white coin I'd be disappointed.

So the reddish toning on the rim to the right of the 7 in the date on the ANACS photo is a shadow?

Humor me and please take another picture of that coin in the pcgs holder and duplicate the shadows.
