This may have been posted before my time here and my neighbors job was to monitor the furnaces at this plant which is right down the road from me, unfortunately he moved to Nebraska before I was aware of this incident https://www.coinworld.com/voices/bill-gibbs/an_unexpected_phone.html

Wow very interesting article. I was unaware of the 1974 Lincoln cents that were struck on a bronze-clad steel planchet with regular dies.
Thanks for posting.

I wish I would've known about this before he retired and moved away he had worked there for 40+ years didn't retire till age 72 so I am sure he knew something about this.
How long ago did he move? Have you tried contacting him?
Pretty interesting!! I'm fascinated with the so-called "forbidden" coins. I wish the government would stop trying to hunt down the 1933 Double Eagles in particular (as there was a several week window where they could have been legally obtained).
Lol that's a funny story. His wife is a nasty b**** and he kept telling me when he retires he is going to Nebraska about 1 week after retirement I was running out to the store seen him parked with all 4 doors of his truck open and when I returned his truck was gone and I haven't seen him since that day and I have no contact information for him and dam sure not asking her. He has a son in the Air Force who lives in Nebraska
How cool! I served in the AF and was stationed at Offutt AFB in Nebraska. Sure would have like that guy to be my next door neighbor. Lol

Some of them still exist
I truly savor reading those kind of stories and they give me goosebumps.

Apologize for the delay, was at the doctors. Did a search and found it though.

Thank you for the exposé on a coin I'm sure the majority of us were unaware of.
There was a time when probably more than half the town worked at the steel plant and I have been racking my brain trying to think who I know that may still be around. The plant is still operating under the owner Cleveland Cliffs
William T. "Bill" Gibbs worked for me before I left Coin World in late 1978. He stayed on and eventually ran the damn place, and a fine job he did.
He has contributed much to the hobby over the decades and is, I believe, one of the unsung greats of the hobby. He belongs at the top of the list of Coin World's Most Influential Numismatists list.

Interesting read. Bought this one a little over a month ago... if you catch up with your old neighbor let him know I'm thinking about letting it go for the right trade.
