***FOUND THEM***I need to retire from everything Numismatic

My family consisting of 8 people had reservation at a VRBO in Lahaina Hawaii for 7 days starting last Friday. Luckily we got the cancelation notice 24 hours in advance. Two of our members were coming from japan. They made it to Honolulu. But in order to see us, thye had to fly from there to Boston, to North Caolina. Four of us then drove to Maimi and boarded a cruise ship to Bimini and Curasol. So I ended up staying at home. Now we go to file for our refunds. The airlines of course only give you a credit for future flights up to one year. We filed for our $16k VRBO refund. They have told us that the owners of the condo will refund that. The owners say ,No, the Vrbo Inc refunds that. Now we are already in a duel. We also had to file for our rental car, a zip-line excursion, meals...etc. Oh goodie. But since I'm home I decided to look through my coins and currency. Before I left, I stashed them all over my house just to scatter them in case of thieves. Wait for it.................................Now I can't find some of them. I'm tearing up my home as we speak. I finally found the buliion, but I can't find the coins or currency. I scatter them just in case thieves break in, they would have to look all over the house, and that would take time. I don't think safes are worth it. Their fire proof status is around 2 hours max.Only the big ones cannot be moved. SO. I'm having a delightful day. If I don't find the rest, I'm selling off. I'm 76 and cannot possible start over. Please be kind with your comments if any.

I hope you find them, I'm sure there are there somewhere. best of luck!
Good luck.
Mr_Spud
Wish you a good luck...........
Sounds like you have made a wise decision. Best of luck to you.
You'll find them. They'll be in the last place you look !!! Seriously, hope they're located.
Good luck! With my ADD that occurs almost every day.
Sorry for your ordeal. Sounds like a good support system with legal help would be advisable.
I can sympathize. My stuff is also scattered around but it's mainly due to lack of proper organization.![;) ;)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
Why not use multiple small fireproof safes, scattered around? Throw some decoy stuff into the mix (fake gold coins from China, etc.).
And make a "treasure map" for your own benefit and that of your family.
Good luck my friend! I am 84 and cashed out all my coins in the last year.
It reaches a point in life that the coins need to be liquidated as there are not too many collectors that will take over your collection when you pass on and you just don't feel comfortable when leave for a vacation.
A safe bolted to the floor- professionally installed- is a tiny bit better than hiding your holdings around the house, IMHO.
I will spend most of my energy on the people that went through and either survived or didn't survive the tragedy over in Lahaina instead of budgeting some of my thoughts and prayers for you in your attempt to get refunds from a zip-line business etc.

When it rains it pours. Have a nice sip of bourbon and re-look tomorrow.
Good luck with finding the "stuff".
I sympathize regarding the trip. Our Hawaii vacation was cancelled a few times due to Covid. Finally got their last September. We stayed at a hotel just down the road from where the fires occurred.
And if you don’t remember it when you find it, that’s messed up. Good luck with the changes.
I am still looking for a $5 Indian Gold piece that I hid years ago.
Best to make a list with hiding places on a small piece of paper in your wallet when you hide stuff.
Best of luck, the stuff must be there somewhere. In the future perhaps a list of where you stash the stuff then tape the list to the bottom of a table or drawer. I keep my stuff in an SDB to avoid this very issue, only a few very inexpensive or recent purchases that have not made it to the bank are kept at the house and I have a small safe for those.
My Collection of Old Holders
Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
The good news is you will find them eventually because they never left your house.
Keep reminding yourself they are just misplaced and NOT lost.
Most importantly, forgive yourself for making a mistake. We are all human and we all make mistakes. Try not to be too hard on yourself!😎
It took me over 11 Years to find 3 lost coins.
Found them on the floor inside a file cabinet.
Wow... sorry for the whole set of circumstances
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
Good luck with finding the coins. They'll eventually turn up. Regarding VRBO I assume that they would ultimately be the party that you would have to get the refund from since you booked through their platform and VRBO will be the ones dealing with the owner.
@braddick
By golly you're right. It's not just the refunds, it's the hassle we'll be going through. Of course that's not nearly the hassle those folks on Lahaina are going through. Tell you what. I'll send $1,000 to the Red Cross if you will match it. Then maybe some other folks will join in. Thanks for the kind comments.
In the meantime, don't clean house and discard books or clothing etc until you find all your coins. A friend of mine hid a 1799 gold eagle rattler AU58 in a book to hide it from his son and it went into the trash inside the book that was thrown out a few months later
Commems and Early Type
OH NOOOOO!
That's one of the worst ones I've ever heard, brought a tear to my eye. That one almost rivals the coin that was dropped in wet concrete

Money sure doesn't grow on trees; I'm sure every dealer and collector that has been robbed wished they had paid someone to help them coming back from a show or in their home than suffered the painful things that go with thefts.
That's unfortunate news about your family vacation and the misplacement of your collection. However, since it appears it is confined to your house, there is a high likelihood that it can be found with a diligent search of the premises. Good luck!
SDB, all the way.

Good luck!
The safe comment is a little odd. How fireproof is your couch?
Try hiding more coins. You might find the old ones in the place you are trying to put the new ones.
Glad you avoided being there during the fire. Best of luck with your hunt. Maybe some of those tracking tags people put in their luggage next time would prove helpful.
Good luck finding your coins. I've hid wallets and coins from myself and forgot where I put them for a few years as well. It drives me nuts!
Safes have a bolt hole in them. You are supposed to afix a screw to anything structural then bolt the safe onto that. So that no one can walk away with it and they need to sheer a thick metal bolt before the safe moves.
Even the big ones are rather easy to move otherwise.
The substantial truth doctrine is an important defense in defamation law that allows individuals to avoid liability if the gist of their statement was true.
Have you checked the freezer?
Collector, occasional seller
I didn't choose the freezer because I read thaat burglars go there regularly. I put them in a metal, locked filing cabinet, a fireproof bag, a small safe, and then five or six other silly places. That's the problem. I don't remember those silly places. I use shirt vests safes. Ever heard of those? They are great for traveling and hiding your cash and/or wallet. Not so good for leaving them at home with coins and notes in them!!! I feel really dumb now.
Look inside your shoes inside of the shoe boxes and between towels in the linen closet, and the in the attic with the Christmas decorations
Have you consider the alternative in locating the misplaced coins amd currency. If you can still not locate all your coins and currency there is another road to take and all you need To Do is call Your local police department and get a recommendation for a rather crafty thief that has a record as long as both of your arms and maybe one of your legs.
Almost assuredly this person will be able to find what you have missplaced in no time at all. You could also buy/rent/borrow a metal detector.
Good luck with the coin hunt. 🙂

Being involved in a “crisis” or situation heavily affects ones emotions, actions and reactions. An uninterested or uninvolved person that you know and trust may be your best allie to look for your coins without the same stress you are experiencing. Obviously for it to work best or have better odds of success you can’t put anything emotionally on them—this is you dropping the ball solely. Remember that a friend or family member is there to help you be part of the solution, not the problem.
Chance favors the prepared mind.
Hate to admit it but I've hidden things from myself on more than one occasion. As already mentioned, the key thing to remember is to be careful with your trash. Double and triple check everything you throw out. Same goes for laundry, in case you stashed coins there. Seriously, what thief wants to go through your unwashed skivvies?
One trick I've learned is walk around the house and go room to room, holding in your hand something similar to the item you hid. Ask yourself in each room, where do I want to hide this while I'm gone? Chances are, you'll pick the same place you hid your missing coins.
Suggest Hugh Wood insurance for your collection and then avoid repeating this practice in the future.
"Got a flaming heart, can't get my fill"
The good news? All those coins and currency are in your home safe and sound.
I have always wanted to put a big floor safe into my garage floor, disguise it and cover it with my tool box or some other large item that would be of no interest to thieves. If there were a fire, a safe deep under concrete in the garage should survive the ravages of a fire.
Wow, really sorry to hear. Hope you can find the coins soon.
My daughter and her soon to be ex hid $400 in one of there 1000 + books they have, for emergency purposes. They can't remember what book it was and have been unsuccessful in finding the $400. He probably spent it and didn't tell her.![:/ :/](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/confused.png)
I have a 1500 lb gun safe bolted to the concrete slab foundation and it's rated 2.5 hours at 1200 degrees. It helps me from having to hide anything.

I once checked out a book from the school library only to find an envelope with my handwriting on it and a $2 bill in it. I had apparently used it as a bookmark when i read the book 2 years earlier, and no one else had checked the book out until I needed it for a paper on the battle of the bulge 2 years later. So hey....there's still hope you find it all.
But seriously....get insurance and then you dont have to worry about it.
Not about the coins, but for the VRBO, can't you just do a CC chargeback? I mean, VRBO may ban you permanently, but at least you get your refund. Sometimes just filing a chargeback prompts the company to do the refund on their own since they know they are going to lose.
Same here as far as safes go. It would take some serious time and energy to get into my safe. When I crank the handle to close it 8 bolts lock the door in place. Mine is also rated at 2.5 hours and is moisture controlled. I think it's crazy not to spend the money on a safe when so much is at risk. Also the alarm system on my house is my first line of defense. The sound of the siren scares the Jesus out of me when I set it off by mistake. That's two lines of defense.
I hope you find your coins I really do. I've lost my car keys and I know it's enough to drive you nuts.
Ask St. Anthony to help you, can't hurt.

Good luck in the search. You will find them - they are there - somewhere. I also had mine stashed around the house and someone did break in. They trashed and went through everything- kitchen cabinets, the freezer (I didn't have any in these spots). They got most of mine- wish I had gone the small safe route. The mess and the loss of some things like a china pitcher my grandmother painted (that they broke) and all my W mint quarters (searched from rolls) is the worst.
edit to add - I, too am considering retiring from collecting.
Oh man.....you know they just spent the W quarters too....so sorry for your loss.😣
They'll turn up. I do the same thing with my watches. Keep most in safety deposit box and the ones I have at home at any given time I scatter around the house. Without fail every month or two I'll not be able to track one down and then later that night I'll be sitting on the couch and out of nowhere it will hit me where I left it.
There has been an on-again-off-again debate among forum members of "Home Safe vs. Safe Deposit Box" at a local bank and my reasoning has been consistent: What is most important, the security of coins or the ability to look at them at any given moment?? Had the OP chosen the SDB this moment of stress would have been avoided.
I lost my glasses last week. My wife found them in the freezer yesterday!! 😂 🤣

I think that alot of collectors have days when we just want to "sell it all", at least I have. Unfortunate about your cancelled vacation and all of the headaches that result of it. Everyday is a new day for something memorable to happen.
