I am looking to jump in some reading specifically on Half dollars and a wide swath of coins! I do not care for Cherry Pickers guide since the format doesnt really work for my style. I like page by page examples of every variety worth knowing

Any suggestions ? Will buy on amazon or b&n regard
Half dollars - any specific series?
Maybe start with the Resources thread pinned to the top of the US forum.
The first post of the first page (OP). Just a little down to 50c.
There are several online books and websites listed for half dollars and some covering varieties.
Might give you an idea of best book or series for you.

Which half dollars? The Seated reference is different than the bust reference, etc
Capped Bust
Early United States Half Dollars by Steve Tompkins is fantastic, but only covers through Draped Bust (1794-1807). I believe other volumes were planned to cover the later Capped Bust coins, but I don't know that they've been published yet.
Bust Half Fever
If such a book existed or guide which displays major varieties on type coinage but not a guide that is 200 pages long however
Something maybe 50 pages or less with notable varieties to be on hunt for
Not the 55 Double die
Or your every day popular variety that everyone knows about but the Overtons the interesting ones that are worth looking for, Washington-Half dollars lets get some ideas
Not sure
This website is free but not about type and major varieties but rather most all of.

The bust half nut club has a page for book history. A couple of them the description might be close to what you are asking about but then there is also the age of the book. Give it a look at:

R5, now it is time for me to look for more and Capped Bust halves will be my focus - who was it who found the Curl Base 2 dime once (I remember him on forum while doing a search)...
Secondary type: Washington quarters (what are some other nifty varieties that would be worth looking for that are worth some good cash ?

After my previous post it then hit me.
The red book might be one to consider. It will list many major/popular varieties on bust halves (and type coinage).
(Many people and including me did/do redbook varieties)
Then if you want more information on that specific variety, go to a specialized book or website.

What are some tell tail signs this is an R5+ using this recent acquistion as one specimen thank you
Seeking something a little more specific for certain popular varieties.
I don't know about books, but if you are interested in Capped Bust Halves, Dave's Bust Half Site is free on the internet. It has pictures and written descriptions of every die marriage. It also indicates rarity ratings. James
