Hi All,
New to this forum and just came into possession of a bunch of coins from my grandfather. I am trying to figure out if the damage on the reverse side of this 1881 Morgan was from the Mint or post-Mint? Is there any value to this coin or should I just see it as something funky?
Thanks

Strictly post-mint damage.
100% post-mint damage.
Always ask yourself: how would this happen in the minting process?

I was trying to figure out what would be able to make such deep dents with such well defined shapes.
Maybe a screw driver
Bullion coin, sorry.
Hello. If unfamiliar with, then do a search on the internet and check the images. Try searching something like coin counterstamp or trade dollar chap marks. There seems to be no end to the variety of things 'punched' into coins.

A knife point is also a possibility.
Yes, particularly since this one appears to have had the tip broken off, probably from stabbing things that shouldn't be stabbed... like coins.![:D :D](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/lol.png)
