What's going on at PCGS

mrcommemmrcommem Posts: 1,175 ✭✭✭✭✭
I sent my coins to be pedigreed at the beginning of June. My green signature card shows that they received my coins on June 6. PCGS only posted receipt of them on June 28. There has been no movement since then. Anybody know why PCGS is so slow? By the time I get the coins back I won't be listed in the top 10. I think I already have dropped from #5 to #9 in the time they have had my coins.

Sounds like my case. I sent my 1792-1964 type set & my 20th centeury circ strike type set in for pedigree the 8th of Jun. Total of 66 coins in all. When the database showed nothing a couple weeks later, I called and was told they had nothing under my name or invoice number. Needless to say, that can get a guy nervous. I found my registered mail receipt, and called back. They located it in the "problem invoice" stack. I had asked for two services on the same invoice--pedigree & regrade 3 coins. After they located it, it showed up under a new invoice number, as arrived 28 Jun.

The status has not changed since.

  • The same thing happened to me , too. I sent my Suzie set in to get pedigreed on 6/11 . My return receipt was signed on 6/14 ; When nothing showed up by 6/27 , I called and there was no record of it . Panicked , I went to the Post Office , and had them track it. Sure enough , it was delivered to them. I then called PCGS again on 6/28 , and they had it. I just received it back in the mail yesterday , so would assume you should get yours back any day now. It seems like our stuff gets there ok , then sits on a shelf somewhere for a couple of weeks , un-opened , so they have no record of our submission number. Then they open it , and post the submission number. It is nerve wracking though , waiting those couple of weeks.

So much for grades posting Friday or Monday... they still aren't up. I've only been checking about once every 20 minutes that I'm home and awake.

I finally received confirmation of shipping of my coins that were sent to PCGS on June 6th. I sent 11 coins for regrade of the 50 coin set.

Here are the results of the regrade of 11 coins

    Pan Pac Half Dollar MS63-----------------same
    Albany MS64---------------------------------same
    Lafayette Dollar MS63----------------------same
    Missouri Half MS64--------------------------same

    getting discouraged

New Rochel Half MS64--------------------Upgrade to MS65
    Stone Mountain Half MS65----------------same
    Vermont Half MS63-------------------------same
    Columbia Half MS65-----------------------Upgrade to MS66
    Connecticut Half MS64--------------------Upgrade to MS65
    Grant Half MS64-----------------------------same
    Gettysburg Half MS64----------------------same

Not too bad of results. I am very surprised the Columbia upgraded to MS66. It is a toned coin and all the rest were white or slightly rim-toned. I think this toned commem craze is overgrading a lot of beat-up coins that are masked my toning. I have not received the coins as yet but should be soon as they were shipped on July 23rd. I don't know if this is representative of the percentage of coins upgrading when sent for regrade but it seems to be a lot better than the 1-15 crossover ratio of NGC to PCGS that I have recently experienced.

Well, I finally got my pedigreed set back from PCGS. Its only been there since June 6th. It looks to me that they did a good job as I didn't find any fingerprrints, scratches or other problems. I thank them for a job well done!!!

I would like to avoid sending my coins to PCGS for pedigree by mail. I would like to deliver them to PCGS in person. What is their street address and who should I call for an appointment?

    Thanks.

    Matt,

I don't know what their address is, since I don't live anywhere near California. You might have a better chance to take your coins to one of the shows that PCGS attends and leave your coins with them.
  • Matt:

    Contact Charlie at ext. 141.
He should be able to set up a time to drop off your coins.
