2023 American Liberty Medal

spyglassdesignspyglassdesign Posts: 1,634 ✭✭✭✭✭

Anyone else like the new design for the 2023 American Liberty Medal? This is the first medal I'm actually liking a lot and might try to get a couple... Or maybe a graded sample.

Yeah I never saw medals as money makers but like this years design!

  • I like it! I’ll get one for my collection. Not worried about making money off it.

I’m definitely buying one, too. I love the design. I was considering the gold, but not at the price the Mint usually charges. Instead, I bought a Spanish reverse proof gold doubloon coin from a dealer at much closer to the value of gold than the Mint charges.

Purchased the silver medal. Extremely fast and easy. Got order acknowledgement instantly!

I got 2, just because of some of the quality issues of the Morgan's and peace so I have at least one decent one... Also won a 70 cheap on auction as well.

I would have liked to have gotten the gold, but not at $2,865 for a 1 oz. coin.

Yeah a $900 premium is a bit much...

I received 2 that I ordered today. They are beautiful. I will send them both in to our host. I should add, the photos here don’t do it justice. It has a very beautiful look to it.

You are right... cell phone is just a fair idea. I will take some high res photos soon. I also have a 70 on order as well with a neat looking label... Didn't expect the 2 I got to look this nice. So I'll probably sell one raw and keep one raw to go with the 70.

Don't collect US mint medals but this one is nice.... Maybe I'll pick one up down the road.

Looks like my medal has the same rim issue (even the same place) as the Gold High Relief Liberty I received this morning...

Yeah a $900 premium is a bit much...

And a premium of 350% over spot for the silver medal is ok?

I like the design, but for a medal or round, it's overpriced and most likely not going to sell out nor retain it's issue price. At least the gold is a "monetized coin."

I bought it because I like it, not because of the price, except that I didn't buy the gold because of the price. If I could afford the gold I'd probably consider it too.

Here is my attempt to photo this coin... The surface is so reflective it was catching it's own reflection off the lens!

Burnie- is that haze that has already developed on the coin near the eagle’s crotch?

I did order one of these on the day they became available. With the exception of the two issued in 2016, I have all the Liberty silver medals and I feel they make a pretty nice set. I do like the bristlecone pine and eagle combination for 2023.

Looks more like reflection than coin haze...

I sent it back already...Aside from the rim damage, the coin looked absolutely beautiful.

Got my medal today. Absolutely stunning! However, the box it came in is cheap and is not proper to house and display the beautiful medal. I wish they would have charged a few dollars more and put it in a decent case.

I agree. Do you have any ideas for a nicer display and/or box for it? I have the 2023 medal and also a 2022 silver medal. Might be nice to display them together somehow 🤔

I think a simple black or navy leather/leatherette case with black or navy velvet interior would look nice. The medal is just too beautiful to come in a box.

@Burnie If I want to learn I have to ask - what am I looking for good or bad with the edge? I see something on mine near the end of 'states' and 'of', but I can't tell if it is a reflection. Do I have to take it out of the capsule to tell?

Yes, I would remove the medal from the capsule and have a good look under magnification. I don't know exactly what the issue is (or the correct terminology), but the rim edge by the word States, is missing some of it's finish.
Unfortunately, this was exactly the same issue I had on my Gold Liberty High Relief. I decided to return both.

FYI, in 25 years, I've never returned a coin to the Mint, until now that is.
