How strong is the market for 1916-d dimes?

logger7logger7 Posts: 8,641 ✭✭✭✭✭

I sold a few low grade 1916-d dimes recently and it seemed that my pricing was a little on the low side. It looks like even AG3 are pushing over $700 and G4 coins are bringing over $1000! Also a dealer I know recently got well over $2K for a cleaned 1955 ddo! The no problem MS63 rb 1955 ddo are approaching $5K!

Go to any of the big online vendors; they all have lots of 1916-D Mercury dimes. And, yes the prices are higher than they were a few years ago.

If all the dealers have them and the prices are high, sounds like the market is pretty strong.
Too bad I don’t have one yet.

Based on your post, it looks as if you already had a good idea of the answer to your question.

Key dates and rarities have been on a tear, more so than the overall market.

Nothing is as expensive as free money.

Interesting. From 7/31/20-6/30/23 the Key Date Index is up 41.6% (although that's cherry picking a date near the bottom of the market due to the pandemic). Cherry picking those same dates, the S&P 500 (including dividends) is up 42.5% during the same time frame. I haven't done an exhaustive study but my suspicion is that coins have rarely had such a similar return to stocks over that long of a time frame.

I've seen the same for the 1909-S VDB and 1955 doubled die cents, I bought AU-58 CAC examples of each before 2020 and both have done very well based on the auction prices I'm seeing now.

I'm still kicking myself for not buying a real nice VF for $1895.00 back in the late 1980's from my local dealer.

Just goes to show you. That seemed like an awful lot of money for that coin back then.

Going WAY back, the key dates always seemed expensive. Nothing new here.

For anyone looking for one, there's always a TON of certified examples around for whatever the going price is, so don't be in a hurry to pick up any G that comes along without doing comparisons to others. I had a so-so surfaces G example years ago, and was pleased to be able to sell it for a small profit at the time over my cost. I'll pick up an AG or G again eventually to refill that (virtual) hole in my album.

All this talk of selling...I suggest you find one you want to keep, then the strength of the market won't matter.
