Bass Early Gold NEWP

ProofmorganProofmorgan Posts: 762 ✭✭✭✭✭

This came in from HA this week. I’ll send to JA as I think it’s very original and hard to beat at that grade.

The extra stamp with notations from Bass was a treat. Anyone else get one of these? It’s hard to follow and looks like he updated it a couple times. They didn’t advertise extras in the sale or viewing. Curious what others received with the coins.

    Dang! That is nice!

Might the CEB initials be with regards to Catherine E. Bullowa?

Beautiful coin and amazing it came with the card with notations. Nice piece of history.

Congratulations! That’s a stunning piece of old gold, with great character.

I acquired a couple pieces from the January Bass auction, and this letter and inserts arrived weeks later, which I thought was a nice touch by HA.

As @lermish noted, I would assume all of these coins were sent to CAC before the auction, as some had the sticker when they crossed the block for the first time.

Thank you for sharing! That’s awesome! I wasn’t enough of a VIP to get the letter ha ha.

I did buy it at FUN in January but used their payment options to stretch it out a bit to buy more coins. That’s why it just arrived. It’s likely that some other 1805s sold in that sale or subsequent for much less based on the quality.

I have sent coins to JA twice before and sometimes he feels different after taking another look. In a collection full of “conserved” pieces it really stood out amongst many of the other Bass coins.

Notably, your coin was a resale as it originally sold in the January FUN auction for almost 70% (!!) more than what you paid.

    Proofmorgan,
Great looking coin! I lot viewed quite a few of the Bass coins and agree that there were a lot of messed-with coins. I assume it had a lot to do with collecting by die variety and having to settle many times.

However, my understanding is that every single Bass coin was sent to CAC prior to auction so if it doesn't have a sticker it's likely that it already did not pass.

Agree, I would bet all of them made the trip to CAC.

I was talking to a dealer, back in January I believe and was asking him why there wasn’t more CACs in the Bass coins that were sold then and he said after he looked at them, he thought they really pushed those grades to the max! Perhaps CAC thought so as well.

I really don’t know myself, just repeating what I was told.
That being said, those Bass coins are very impressive!

That’s been my general assessment as well. Incredible coins, some a bit generously graded by PCGS. CAC was smart to hold the line, IMO. Our hosts may have felt some pressure given the high-profile sale and/or the fact that the sale proceeds are going to the Bass foundation for charitable purposes. I’m speculating, not accusing.

Utterly gorgeous. It does not need any stickers. The coin speaks for itself.

Independent of the great coin , please do not lose those flips ... so many flips that were referenced in other historic auctions with interesting notes have since been lost. I sold some Newman pieces this past year through Heritage and the flips/ envelops I received when I won the lots were included when I sent them in, they were not noted in the sale ... I wonder if they were lost in the masses. I find these as an added dimension to the pedigree - maybe many do not care but I appreciate all of the history
