GSA Hardpack Question

LeeBoneLeeBone Posts: 4,492 ✭✭✭✭✭

Just looking at my 80-85 GSA's I noticed that the 84 Hardpack doesn't say Uncirculated above where it says Silver Dollar at the bottom.
Does anyone have some info on this?
Thanks!
:)

Well I suspect that they might Not have been 'coin graders' doing the selection. :)
Mine has toning and what killed it for Unc but also is nice I think.

When they originally sorted the bags, they separated coins with either excessive contact marks or damage, and toning. Those were set aside and put into holders without "UNCIRCULATED" on it. My 1884 has UNC but my 83 doesn't because there is a small spot of toning.

Just noticed what @lilolme photographed and that is pretty much what it says.

Yes...that type of holder is not common but it was a real thing.

From a time when toning was considered as tantamount to "surface damage" like a scratch.

That's a legit GSA holder...and the coin would very likely sticker as a decent MS grade today!

There was a good deal of unskilled labor used during the sorting process.

It's in a "Mixed" category holder. Should be two certs with it, not the one with the numbers in the upper right corner. These dollars, although uncirculated, could have toning or hazing or such that kept them out of the UNCIRCULATED holder. These were used for coins with "problems or issues" and toning was an issued back in '71.

I’m going to have to pull it out and look at it closer.

I had a 91-CC Without the uncirculated on the hard pack holder, PCGS would not grade it!

uncirculated Silver Dollar GSA = NO TONING

Silver Dollar GSA = Toned, in some part, or had worse (like ms 60-type) looks to them. Usually it means the coin is toned.

The "Mixed CC" coins were sold in the June 1973, April 1974, and February 1980 sales. They were $15 a piece for the first two sales and $45 for the 1980 sale.

I haven't heard of them not being allowed to be graded, and there were some fantastic coins in those holders. I believe those were luck of the draw as far as what year was received.

In that June 1973 sale they also sold the uncirculated non-CC coins for $5 each. Those may have been the best deal (along with the 1890/91CC uncirculated coins for $30) as the low population date/mintmark coins are quite valuable these days. There were 27,949 non-CCs in the hardpacks.

Thanks for answering this longstanding question I've had as well. I can see why this ('84) coin was culled into the Mixed group.

And they must have been allowed a bit of discretion, as this one made it past the screeners.

Your assuming that the toning on the 1878-CC was there at time of encapsulation. Remember the hard packs are all 43 - 52 years old.
