The 1849 Half Dime overdate has been the subject of many threads here at CU and indisputed Seated Half Dime Subject Matter Expert @yosclimber (Clint) has created an online reference resource.
The coinworld title is incorrect, even the HA.com image of the slab indicates 1849/6, although the PCGS auction record indicates 1849/8.
Regardless of which side of the fence you are on, she sure is a looker!

There is no 1849/8.
Don't shoot the messenger;

love the coin thou![:) :)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
This MS-68 ex-Simpson coin is the finest known 1849 half dime, across all die marriages.
It's the plate coin for V-4 (9 / Near 6) in the attribution guide.
The confusion with coins labelled as "9/8" may continue for awhile, as there are so many old Red Books out there, old auction descriptions, and slab labels with this stuff printed on them. Hopefully we are headed in the right direction on that, though.
The Heritage description, quoted by the Coinworld article does mention both designations, and references, so they are trying.
It's definitely not a V-1, though! That's a weird mistake for Heritage to make.
It will be interesting to see if the new Cherrypicker's Guide gets this right.
Supposedly Simpson paid $35,000 for this coin.

Seems clearly a 9/6 coin to me, magnified the pictures provided above. Cheers, RickO
This may be the "Highest Grade" 1849/6 Half Dime known, but the "finest overdate" is still the piece I sold Mr. Half Dime.

Neat rarity and one of a kind issue.
Guilford Coin ("father-time-coin" on ebay) bought a large high end collection of these these half dimes that graded gem and above at PCGS.
Beautiful Half Dime - If there is only the bottom part of the 6 showing I can see how some may think it is an 8 but definitely over 9 over a 6.
"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"
pretty coin
You can see the shape of the 6 atop the 9.
Most excellent pix!
I've seen that coin. It's a very early die state FS-302, a really amazing piece.
This is the @CaptHenway - @MrHalfDime V-2 EDS (9 / Far 6).
Pretty amazing coin.
Now in the collection of one of @MrHalfDime's friends.
The '8' looks triple punched, or is it MD?
It's a true overdate, not a repunching.
1849 / 1846 .
The dates were punched using a gang punch with all 4 digits fixed in position.
The shapes of the 4 and 6 from the 1846 gang punch help identify it as the underdate.
I'm glad that it has a good home.
I remember how truly shocked Mr. Half Dime was that I would actually sell the piece to him. I suspect that in his mind he could not imagine ever selling such a thing, but I knew that he would properly appreciate it, and I wanted it to have a good home.
We lost him way too young.
