Joey and his races.. ;) Well I can’t criticize, you’ve won a lot of stuff.

Type collector, mainly into Seated. -formerly Ownerofawheatiehorde. Good BST transactions with: mirabela, OKCC, MICHAELDIXON, Gerard

Hey Joey, i know nothing about these contests….what was your actual cost foe winning this raffle race?

  • NewEnglandRaritiesNewEnglandRarities Posts: 1,138 ✭✭✭✭

Now you have to petition our host to holder it! What a slab that would be!

YPS makes some interesting products. Not your typical “stacker” bullion.
Congratulations! That is a cool win!

What is a “ raffle race " never heard that term

I believe basically that a seller offers a coin/item with 10 available spots 1-10. Each number costs $10. Let’s say the item is worth $80. The seller will then use a random number generator to pick a number in the rage of spots sold.

So you could potentially win the item for $10. Think of it just like a regular raffle with tickets. Is that basically correct Joey?

Edited to add: These are becoming popular on social media type coin sites. There can be some mixed feelings about them, as often I see the seller offering a $60-70 item basically selling it for $100 because they sell 10 chances at $10 a piece. I get the popularity on the other hand.

But the cost isn't really just the cost of the winning ticket. ;)

I've posted this before, but it reminds me of the old joke about the farmer whose mule died. His friend asked him what he was going to do with it, and the farmer said he was going to sell raffle tickets for $1 to win a mule. So his friend asked him, what are you going do when the winner comes to pick up their mule. To which the farmer replied, oh I'll just refund their dollar. ;)

With that said, congratulations on your win Joey.

    Not quite.
They are not drawn from a number generator. Those are for free Giveaways!
The races are just that, a race.
Say there's 10 spots. So 10 race cars (or whatever the seller chooses) $10 apiece for each of the 10. You can buy 1-10 spots if you want. Usually the item would be worth near the total cost of the 10 spots! Maybe worth, $80? So the seller can make some profit.
In my case. The 10.1 oz. skull would be worth approx.$225.
    25 spots for $10 apiece equals, $250.
    :)

Got it! I’ve seen similar with “duck races” which I think was a common way to do this as well right? I wasn’t suggesting that the seller was doing nefarious actions at all! I think it’s a cool way to offer something, just some people believe it’s a way for sellers to sell a $50 item for $100 (just a general example). I don’t see it that way. I consider it bit more like football squares, or similar. It’s a fun, entertaining way to get “action” on an item and the winner gets a great item with little risk.

Either way, I think it’s a cool item you won. I deal in colonial era items and tokens up to the Civil War and skull/macabre items are always the number 1 demand as a theme! A 10oz skull of silver is a very cool thing to have won! Congrats again Joey!
