PCI graded Mercury dime

Anyone have an idea on the "look" of the toning on this 1916 Mercury dime? Could that be conserved?

Nice coin, but not 100% white anymore ;) . I would suggest some acetone to start, then a quick dip if you’re up for it. :)

I have a later date Merc in the same generation holder PCI that says "95% White" and toned just like your coin did. Not much you can do about it but enjoy it how it looks today.

Fingerprint toning from the guy that pushed the coin into the insert, likely too late to do anything about it.

Sad to see a nice Merc now in that condition. Does not look as if it would be easily dipped. However, the TPG has some really good people and techniques in the restoration group. You may want to contact them. Cheers, RickO

Sell it for whatever you can get and move on. Don't waste money trying to restore it or have it reslabbed.

Looks like a good MS70 candidate.

I tried that with their methods, use Qtip, swirl around surface, etc.. It seemed to lift a lot of the dark toning, etc. off. Too bad the old MS70 isn't available anymore. I think it contained Freon which was banned.

@ricko they won't do conservation to remove toning.

As the years go by and the toning or anomaly worsens, the slab looks better and better.

Needs a dip - then submission to our hosts. Otherwise just put on the bay at 99c. I do think you will get at least melt for it.

It’s definitely an example how the coin has gone bad in the holder / grade imploded.

I dipped the dime with MS70, also had a few other coins that MS70 works on, ie original unimpaired Uncs. with problem toning.

What am I missing? Can you please explain again what you did? Is this your coin? Did you break it out of the PCI holder and resubmit it? I'm confused!

It graded MS64 at ICG. Cracked, used MS70 as the label directed and graded.

You resubmitted it? Graded by who? Pictures through the plastic don't help. That coin is in two different slabs, correct?
