Teller pulled this out of her drawer and asked "Is this real?"

KurisuKurisu Posts: 2,021 ✭✭✭✭✭

Tellers at a few of my banks where I pick up rolls like to ask me about coins they've found over the years.
Typically parking lot coins and sometimes stuff like plated coins...but this time...

She said "Is this real? It jammed up our coin counting machine."

She's a manager who's known me for many years. She just gave it to me
They don't know it yet, but she and her crew are getting donuts tomorrow.

Most banks around here are closed Sunday. One of the credit unions, however, is open and has free coffee. Very nice operation. And they have a free coin counter for the customers! [I visited truce in the last 6 weeks and broke it both times. Lol]

My bank also has free coin counting machine for customers. I used it yesterday. $270

Lucky they didn't see the need to use a pliers to extricate it from their machine.

My guess, based on the thread title, was going to be a $2 note pulled from the drawer.

Your gift/find was much nicer! Congrats.

It seems a little bit odd that the secondary strike does not appear to have mashed out the lower parts of the letters "NT" of CENT. Even if it were some type of brockage, I would still expect the details to be distorted a lot more in that area.

The rim has an unusual look to it. I’m with you. Seems different. Thanks 🙏

Surprisingly, an off-center copper Lincoln is only worth $15.00 according to the 2023 Red Book.

I would have thought it was worth a lot more. No matter, that's still an excellent story and find.

That's not just an off center cent. It's double struck with second strike way off center.

Nice. This credit union will even bring me a cart if I need it. But not a self serve machine, it's in the back...it's fiercely fast lol.
The manager told me a while ago that it does something like 4000 coins per minute.

When I got this penny from her I had brought in about $980 of coins (mostly quarters, dimes, and nickels) in a couple of bags.
She dumped both bags into the tray and I heard it count them in about a minute!
It fills and seals bags on the side of it that are about the size of pillow cases.

Yes, what's up with that. Why no reverse die impression on the reverse 2nd strike? 🤔 Another planchet played a role?

My. guess based on the thread title, was going to be about a trick coin that Teller got from Penn with the "she" being a typo.

The bottom part of the NT is on metal that bent, not metal that was actually between the dies on the second strike.

On the other hand, the rim on the double struck section of the reverse was not flattened, and the details from the reverse die do not appear on the flattened area.

    @1northcoin— Out of his drawers?

  • ChrisH821ChrisH821 Posts: 6,558 ✭✭✭✭✭

No reverse die impression because there was a planchet in the collar. Some other 1972-D cent is out there with a nice partial brockage that mates to this coin.

I agree. See? This is what happens when not enough time (by me) was given to really study the coin.
