*added information* Who else has this problem of acquiring stuff?
![Ppp](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/userpics/7XRSL4WOSV5J/nR42FNPBICFIB.jpeg)
I keep telling myself I will slow down and start reducing my inventory. My other half has threatened me numerous times that if I go first I better not leave her with a mess. Granted, I would be gone and would not hear her yelling at me and I did write down instructions on how and what to do.
I have been finding my inventory blob has been expanding at a slower rate because I do a lot of trading however my stock is still growing and my bank account is still going lower.
Part of the problem is when I find something I think is cool and I have to have it. Example is this 2016w PCGS sp70 fdoi gold centennial set which I traded some my duplicate key dates for. I never seen this set in this type of holder so I had to have it.
I hope this doesn’t come off as complaining because I can afford what I am doing (wife might think otherwise if she knew 🙂) this post is more to find out how others handle the mental aspect when they decided to reduce inventory but it just doesn’t work out.
I figure there has to be others dealing with this problem and I would love to read how others handle this issue.
Have a great day

Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions. I knew I wasn’t alone.
Just to add a little more color to my dilemma regarding the 2016w centennial set. I saw this set on a Friday at my lcs but I bought some other coins. The following Monday I had to go back to my lcs to pick up some coins and I didn’t see the set. That night, I can’t believe I am writing this, I couldn’t fall asleep because I kept thinking about that 2016w set. That morning I called my lcs and they still had it and that afternoon, well the rest is history.
Now has anyone lost sleep over coins they didn’t buy?
My friends say I am out of control and they are probably right but I am having a lot of fun. I figure I might as well have fun while I am still on the right side of the grass.🙂

Nice acquisition!

You are certainly in the right place for some great feedback. There are quite a few recovering coin addicts here (and you know who you are) that will be happy to partake in this intervention. 😂 🤣
Don't feel bad. We have all been there. 😉

I have a problem...
I like to buy. The other day I bought the original art for a Matchbox coloring book. Why? There were no coin or comic auctions of interest. LOL.
Sometimes, I have to place low ball bids in auctions just to quell the demon and (hopefully!) not buy anything.
That's really why I became a part-time dealer. I'm more addicted to buying than I am to spending time with my acquisitions....
i know the feeling when i see a coin i like it's bought

Similar, similar......
I am selling off my Bust Half collection and buying some DOGS that will be easy to sell when that time comes.
Reduced total numbers from over 200 items to 6 and Wifie loves the Dirty Old Gold.
Lots more to go but enjoying the process....
In cases like this I figured that sticking a business card from a divorce attorney up on the refrigerator might settle things down.![:* :*](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/kiss.png)
I definitely understand how stuff can take over, but if you are buying smart (as I am sure you are) then your accumulation should hold its value or increase.
It's better than a hobby which involves spending lots of money to engage in it with no tangible return. Your present hobby is not consuming money, just changing its form.
Try putting together a Top 10 want list of big coins that you would absolutely try to buy if they became available, even if it required selling other less important things from your collection. And for each one of those coins, estimate the cost and write it down, and then total the ten prices. Then, whenever you're on the fence about buying something not on the list, take a look at the list and consider your priorities.

That is a really cool purchase @Ppp . If I come across one of those I will struggle not to buy it. Congrats.

I’m really guilty of this. The other day a bought a coin for the Roosie album. Not only was it a duplicate, it turns out that I had bought the same dirty dang coin 3 times. Frustrating? No
My simple mind just justifies it by saying “ well now we’ve got options.”
I find myself strolling down the lonely streets of eBay in desperate search for what? I don’t know. Perhaps another silver round? Maybe, maybe, Maybe.
Then that little voice I’ve identified as JM reminds me that “ cash is king”
Now I find out that he’s as guilty as I of needing something anything and I’m shocked 🙀🤨🤔 although I’ve never considered buying a million pennies 🧐. Yet😂😂😂
🎶 shout shout, let it all out 🎶
I bought a couple of them on eBay. I'm guessing that some company ran a promotion when they were first issued and arranged with PCGS to make a special three-coin slab for them.

I acquire 'stuff', and not just coins. Stuff for my other hobbies, stuff that interests me, and just stuff in general that I think I may use at some point. Working on curbing my acquisition habits... Making progress. Cheers, RickO
I was never an impulse buyer but now buy even less by almost eliminating any purchases for secondary collections. I've also partly sold and will eventually get rid of secondary collection which I no longer plan to add anything.
I've never been tempted to buy random coins as that would reduce my ability to buy what I really want. Practically all of it is available anytime anyway if I change my mind later.
Recovery is a process not a destination.
LOL. That's why I sell 98% of what I buy. I get to keep buying and keep the cash.![;) ;)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
If I buy the million Lincolns, I would plan on having zero Lincolns by the end of 2023...even if the last half million have to go into a coinstar (or 100).
I have similar issues. For me, I go through phases of accumulation and impulse buys. Then I get real organized and get rid of excess and duplicates. Then I trick myself into thinking that I have it under control enough to splurge a little and end up accumulating and making impulse buys again.

My strategy:
I’ve been gradually selling off my junk on eBay or to dealers at shows who specialize in raw coins.
I’ve been selling my better stuff (PCGS or NGC) on the BST or consigning with GC, HA, etc.
Stay focused and only buy better stuff.
Avoid impulse purchases.
And most importantly have FUN and do it your way.
I have been seriously thinking and talking about selling some of my coins and focusing on my main collection.
But that is all I do is think about it, never take action to actually sell.
Truer words have never been spoken. 😂 😉

With me, I think I’m cured and reformed.😂
Then I see a coin, maybe in a different series than I actually collect, that is really nice and I might just go and pull the trigger!
It’s a gawd awful disease!😉
At least now if I buy something, it’s going to be really nice so hopefully I can come out sometime in the future.
I go through this all the time and keep telling myself that I’m done, but every time I see a nice coin; I have to have it. That’s the problem with numismatics, There’s thousands of series and dozens of coins in each series. Many are expensive. Where does it end? The problem is that traditional investments aren’t any fun. 🥲 I really have to force myself to invest, in them, then when I do, I feel ‘safer’ spending ‘extra’ money on numismatics. That’s what works for me, anyway. You have to make a budget and stick to it. Unless you’re a billionaire, everyone has a budget no matter how rich you are.
Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

I hear you.
I'm more discriminating in my tastes these days, preferring higher quality, graded coins but I'm little less focused on just one or two series as I get older. Perhaps it's because I have more disposable income that I can use to buy the coins (and things) I was unable to in the past. That being said, there are many coins I don't have any use for, and I've started selling off junk silver, foreign coinage and series that don't interest me. I'd rather sell off bulk coins and use that money to purchase one nice example in a series I'm focused on.
Quality over quantity...

I have a general rule, not just in coin collecting but material things in general: for every new thing that comes in, something of equal size has to go. Clothing, furniture, decorations, everything. Nothing worse than "clutter", especially a cluttered mind![:) :)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Lol... I have no idea what you are talking about![ ](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/sweat_smile.png)

You might want to walk her through the process of selling through whatever venue you're thinking. Give her some coins and see what happens. For sure, she's going to have a lot of questions.

Well, it is a nice set.

If your wife doesn't like like the situation then tell her to take it up with your LCS.
I've lost a little sleep over various collectibles on occasion. That's when I know I need to just go ahead and buy it for my own mental health.![:) :)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
If you really like this PCGS three-piece 2016 gold centennial commemorative set, they occasionally appear on eBay so I suggest that you check there.
