Opinions on cleaned coin.

IYO, is this coin cleaned? Please give it a grade too. The top-down pics are rather unflattering, though the angled pics are more accurate. Thank you!

All them marks left to right look like a cleaning to me but I am no expert

I agree, the scratch marks on the front and back give me the impression it has been cleaned with something rough.
The color is also wrong, a 140 year old coin shouldn't look like fresh metal. It should show its age and this one does not.

Thanks guys, in person it looks a lot better and I thought maybe being a xf/vf coin it could have some white metal showing. I guess I was wrong. :) The coin was inherited from a small coin collection so I wasn’t losing much.

The top-down photos are unflattering because they show the effects of the coin being cleaned

I’m guessing it was cleaned with moistened baking soda on a toothbrush. Try this on some pocket change in order to know what the effect is and then you’ll know what to look out for so you can avoid buying cleaned coins.

It wasn’t bought (lucky me ;) ) but I’ll definitely try that on some junk silver later. Thanks. :)

I remember in the old days seeing collectors and some dealers taking baking soda and adding just enough water to create a paste like consistency and then rubbing the paste on the coin with their thumb in a circular motion. On non-mirrored coins, it usually wouldn't leave any evidence of hairlines.

That’s why I think a toothbrush was involved. Looks like the back and forth lines you would get with a toothbrush with something abrasive on it. A wire brush or Brillo pad are other possibilities
