Who was the lucky bird that snagged this piece?

I was staring at this right when it listed and my dumb self decided to research the c/s and see if it was in Brunk
I came back 3 mins later and it was sold. Didn't even notice the triple strike until after. I will definitely be kicking myself over it.

Not I, but it is a date I look for, usually sans hole. I would have made an exception for this multi-strike error. However, it does make me wonder what kind of premium a holed coin with such an error would command. With the counterstamp (assuming it’s an undesirable one), heavy wear, and a large hole, I have a feeling the value isn’t that substantial even with the error. This coin reminds me of an 1820 No Serifs I had many years ago. It, too, was holed, but due to the damage and low grade (I think it was VG/F), the price it realized at auction far less than I hoped for.
Great question @BustHalfBrian, who can even know the exact market value for this type of item. With a small crowd of serious bust half collectors and significantly less serious bust half error collectors, this piece would need to be in the presence of at least a couple error specialists to realize a solid price.
I can say I would pay up for this example, despite the hole, because it is a good study piece. The damage and counterstamp does not distract much from the error.

I would have paid many multiples of the BIN price.........
I don't know what the bin was but I'd pay one more multiple than @habaraca

It appears like we found our group of specialists.
Let the auction commence, there will be a 15% buyers premium. Raise your paddle number when you would like to increase you bid. Bidding will start at $20. Do I have $20?
$30? Ok, now $40... hummuna hummuna $60 hummuna hummuna $85...

That's the thing about "damaged" coins.
I realize that peeps want nice coins, but it still is a nice representation of the coin.............hole or not.
Pete
Holed, counterstamped and a genuine mint error.... that is quite the coin. Cheers, RickO
Don't know but they got a heck of a deal. I would have loved to have seen it first.
I found this one in a box of loose coins at an auction. Thought it was nifty.
Wanted to update this thread... I am now the proud owner of this coin. As unique as it is, I found a way to contact the buyer and purchased it from him.

Congrats! It's a very cool coin.

Okay, so my eyes are tired, where is the PUP for the triple strike?

Congratulations
Congrats!

Very cool piece for sure!!
Way kewl error! Please post some pictures of the multiple strike when you can.
My favorite part is that the stamp is double struck as well!
😁
It is neat to think about this coin's story. Usually dramatic early errors were recognized and worn or carried as conversation pieces, hence the extreme wear apparent on many of the examples available today. I like to think that M.B. AGARD found this coin, stamped his name, drilled the hole, and wore it with pride.
Here are some better photos. First pick up point is the clear obverse and reverse doubling, slightly rotated. That is the most dramatic part of this coin. The third underlying strike can be seen in the form of dentil tracks above the right wing. No more details from the third strike are seen at a glance.
So many talking points to this coin!!

You have to wonder if it’s the same person that appeared on the Civil War draft rolls in Indiana.
@Vasanti That would be super cool to tie this coin to a specific person. I asked the original seller if he had any more info on the coin and none was able to be provided. The seller is a large dealer out of Vegas, but coins can travel very far in a short period of time.

Thank you!
Yup, I see it now.
Great pick up

@Vasanti Is there a way to confirm that this coin is tied to a Civil War soldier?

I doubt it. I just did a Google search for the name and found that one.
What a score! It’s a great year for the series, an excellent example of a double (triple) strike, great details, & a full name obverse counterstamped Bustie!
-I was scrolling through sold items section on ‘The Bay’ a few weeks ago when I saw that one. It wasn’t For Sale for long…
Good work (& a touch of good luck) tracking that price one down.
Unbelievable buy!
I really like it. Congratulations
