Coin dealers, Professional Numismatists, Collectors, Graders, Hobbyists, Authors of Publications or anyone else within the sound of my voice that would like to comment.
Come on guys, be honest. Don't you think "coin roll hunters" are the redheaded step children of the coin collecting and numismatic world?
I made the poll anonymous to protect (you) the innocent. 😂 😉

Just another of dozens of niches in the hobby. If it's something you enjoy, nothing wrong with it. Not to mention finding the occasional new discovery or valuable coin.
I gotta think that most collectors started or at least had a phase where they searched thru rolls. I know I did! When I was a kid I'd have my parents get me rolls from the bank and I'd go thru them looking for interesting coins and spend the rest.
No, they are superstars.
No. Coin collectors are, well, coin collectors.
They do the work that many are unwilling to do.![:p :p](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/tongue.png)
Been there, done that, and learned a tremendous amount about die states in the process.
I no longer roll search myself.
I now view them as my workforce![;) ;)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)

Years ago I was a coin roll hunter. Never really had too much luck.
For collectors on a budget, no better deal than getting coins at face value from coin rolls.
Enjoy the hunt.
I voted "No" to the above poll.
No way. Many collectors engage in CRHing at one point or another.
I did it as a YN driven by the fact that I enjoyed hunting for the state quarters as they were released. Hunted with my grandmother 1999 - 2001 - great memories. I also hunted halves for silver in college since my budget was limited.
A lot of people made serious money hunting W quarters - well into the five figures.
This feels like another thread where someone is trying to tell others they are doing it wrong. It’s getting tiresome.
Not at all. Coin collecting is finding coins at shops, shows, in change, on the internet or in rolls. It is a great hobby and can be enjoyed in many ways. Cheers, RickO
I think CRH is awesome.
I love the competitions PCGS puts on such as the first to find a W quarter. In thinking of it, they kind of remind me of fishing competitions.
I still do it once and a while if I'm snowed in or on a boring day
How often does that happen?
I actually started coin collecting again when I was in an area where I could be snowed in. I kind of miss it!
I keep saying I will check my jars of coins on a snowy day..... Then, either I am working that day, or doing something else. Cheers, RickO
I never felt like a step child. When I was a kid in the mid-'60's, I had access to bags of cents collected from the parking meters in Racine Wisconsin (you old timers remember parking meters don't you?). Made for fun times looking thru them on dark cold winter nights to try to fill my Whitman blue albums which were made a few miles away. This is what got me hooked on collecting and branching out into other series.
Although not the same as coin roll hunting as the coins were in bulk, the principle is the same in my mind.

Been years since I did it, but I'm proud to say that I spent every coin I didn't save, and never returned anything to the bank.
Of course lately it's harder to spend cash in any form, and meanwhile banks are happier to get coins in rolls back.
Not always the best shape but it does pay off and it’s a fun in my opinion.

I voted yes, just because I believe we are winging it and no books,
ain't nothing wrong with it but it is what it is
I'm a crh or what I've learned to expedite the process is buy from others, one trash(is not trash just they don't know what they have and well that makes my job super easy lol easy not but a journey and well we shall all see, well and it's the redheaded moment, is another's treasure 🪙![:) :)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Also mtw124 I see things on your quarter and if you wanted I'm always the sharing is caring
May I ask what it is?

Tonedeaf is a nickname given to me in reference to my guitar playing ability.
Absolutely no
This hobby needs every type of collector we can get.” Nope, don’t like it. No sir I don’t like it “🐴🤠
Ask Joey about his $500 quarter, found, roll hunting. He’s kind of a hero to me. He speaks I tend to listen. I like you too.
Fascinating question. I’m a passionate NO. Thanks 🙏

That’s where all began..
I encourage and applaud their efforts.
Collectors that are able to pick out rare varieties are also good at counterfeit detection. This is because of their attention to detail. Being able to do this is probably the most important aspect of the hobby. IMHO
Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

I'll always remember that my father opened a pass book savings account with $5 in my name so I could crh at a Manhattan bank in Brooklyn. The hunt continues.

Great Thread!
It's raw, dirty, cheap, unethical, troublesome to banks, time waster and very unusual collecting

Forte.
However, I Love it!

Going through rolls of cents when I was around 12 is how I got into the coin collection hobby. I loved it then and I still love it now.
Going through boxes or just rolls of coins is my true addiction too. Usually my hands looks like I just changed the oil in my truck or clean the litter box. I always try to remember to wash/sanitize/ dip/ power wash them before eating too (sometimes I remember - most times I just forget, but the food just tastes better then). ![:D :D](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/lol.png)

I'd say the results are in. Thank you all for the reality check. Your responses are encouraging. For whatever reason, I was always under the impression that CRH'ers were looked down upon by the hobby, numismatic professionals and community. I'm pleased to learn my impressions and thoughts were wrong.
Although the vast majority of my searching is generally fruitless and in vain, it's those little golden nuggets that pop up every now and then that continues to motivate the search.
We've all heard of the poor man's 55DDO. For years (since I was a kid), I viewed my CRH'ing as a poor man's coin collector. Why?....because I'm one of them.
The majority of you have reversed my opinion and outlook. I now believe that CRH'ers "could" in fact be considered the foundation of our hobby. I suppose every Variety, VAM, W-quarter, Speared Eagle, DDO's, DDR's, Struck thru's, Clashes, Wisconsin Extra Leaf, etc..the list goes on and on... were all found by someone searching thru rolls or pocket change.
Thanks for the feedback! 👍🏻

In the 50’s every dang mom in the neighborhood had that devil juice. By the bucket 🪣. Back then the neighbors handled things different. Kid gets hurt. Out came the juice. Kids hungry, they fed em. Kid out of line,, discipline was quick and and usually painful, as you were gunna get it again when you got home. No excuses. If you embarrassed the family that was enough.
I sure miss some things about the old days. Thanks 🙏

Sure, it’s a Doubled Die Reverse FS 801 vf25. I am kind of new at collecting in that as a young one in the 60’s I had the blue Whitman folders for cents but I have been away from coins for my entire adult life. I’m enjoying the journey of getting back into coins after my career. I found this one earlier this year along with another of the same that also straight graded but at vf20. I was surprised but pleased. I like most of what everyone says on here. You all are very helpful.
I think many of us have taken that same exact coin path.

Thanks Oakstar for the encouragement. I’ve always been about the details even as a young child. If my dad lost a screw out of his glasses I could find it or I wouldn’t stop until I did lol. Looking at coins suits me fine I guess and the possibility of finding a gem keeps me looking and looking and looking. Happy hunting for those of you that choose crh as your path.
I started collecting buffalo nickels from circulation in 1957 which made me the coolest kid on the block where every kid was a coin collector. Even when I gave up collecting between 1968 and 1971 and long before I stopped hating clad coins I searched pocket change more to see what was there rather than to merely seek rare coins. I was always fascinated by the concept of coins that represented wealth taking a random walk through the population.
Even today that the coins represent so little wealth it is fascinating to see the coins and to imagine the life each has led. One learns to read the statistics and battle scars accumulated by each one.
I don't believe most collectors now days have much respect for CRHing, so I am somewhat surprised by the poll results.
If I had decent resource at a bank to purchase coins from, I'd be going through a couple boxes a week probably. I really only enjoy quarters and nickels though.
