Nice old copper.... I am not one that looks for absolute perfection on old copper coins. They went through a lot of commerce, and should reflect that. Cheers, RickO

They both look wonderfully original to me... The perfect amount of circulation with all the details still to appreciate.

They look good for early copper, especially the 1803.

Looks like a little rim clip at K-10 on the 1803, doesn't add any value really, just bumps the coolness factor a bit. I love the 1812 also, those are so hard to find with decent surfaces.

I bought the Draped Bust from Tom. He netted it down to 35 due to a fine micro-porosity seen under a loupe. I was looking for the most details and best surfaces (and in THAT order) as my budget would allow. You can see the porous surfaces on Ms. Liberty's neck and again in some of the hair detail. I don't think she'd straight grade but you never know..., she's still raw in my 7070 album.

I basically gave up trying to find a nice solid VF Classic Head with clean surfaces and nice color for less than $2k. I cracked this piece from an ANACS VF30 Details (Corrosion) holder, but I paid about 1/4 as much. It's the one coin I feel as though I compromised on from the entire set.

Now that I'm done with my 7070 and back into early copper, I'll likely revisit both the Classic Heads and Draped Busts. The few others I have are G-VG coins, but all with pleasant surfaces and no corrosion. I've been more focused on Middle Dates recently (I'm working on Redbook Varieties) but I'm coming to a couple of "stoppers"... unless I make some serious compromises...

Your S243 is a pleasure to attribute given all the detail your cent has. I especially like that you can see the extra S under the final S in STATES. The obverse has the diagnostic rim break as well. I see why having a coin like this ...even with the micro porosity is still desirable. For my late dates I would not consider a details coin....but for Draped Bust cents I now understand why detail trumps "details".

Yes, many of us early copper collectors on moderate budgets have learned to compromise. And there are broad and variable qualifiers for what gets a Details grade at the services.

Solid choices for the type set. The '03 does look to have a tiny clip, and does add to the coolness factor.
