A lot of collectors have been asking, so here's an update on the Cherrypickers' Guide.
The 6th edition, volume II, of the Cherrypickers' Guide will debut at the ANA World's Fair of Money in Pittsburgh next month (August 8-12, 2023). A quantity will be available for sale (limit one per customer), and ten autographed copies will be raffled off throughout the show. If you've preordered a copy, it will be shipped to you after the ANA.
The new volume covers half dimes, dimes, twenty-cent pieces, and quarter dollars, from the 1800s to date. Capped Bust, Liberty Seated, and Barber coinage, Mercury dimes, Roosevelt dimes, Standing Liberty quarters, and Washington quarters up through the National Parks. There are about 80 new varieties published in these series, mostly among the Roosevelt dimes, Standing Liberty quarters, and Washington quarters. Every coin type except for Capped Bust half dimes has new varieties. Larry Briggs was the volume editor, working with Bill Fivaz and a number of specialists and organizations.
I'm giving a "Money Talks" presentation at the show, called "Cherrypicking Rare Coins in 2023 and Beyond." You're welcome to attend on Thursday, August 10, at 2:00 p.m. Eastern. It will also be livestreamed as a "NumismaTalks" eLearning Zoom webinar.
We're excited to roll out the latest CPG! Work is ongoing for volume III, which will be out next year.
Here's a sneak-peek photo of an advance copy of the new book.

Awesome! I will preorder a copy now...
That is great and I already have a Whitman pre-order.
How soon until the new Volume III with halves/dollars/gold is expected?
ps - I dislike the binding in brown CPG book from CHINA as it always falls apart after my use.
I much prefer the spiral bound redbook made in USA but am not privy to sizes and costs....
Nice, glad to see it finally hitting the market. I am also looking for Volume III. Cheers, RickO
A lot of work has gone into volume III, as well. It will come out early next year.
Whitman notified me my preorder is shipping today
Will you post when the preorders for Vol III are open?
Attention @StrikeOutXXX
Can I ask the date you placed the order?

I got one at the ANA show yesterday. Very nicely done. Not at all what I was expecting as far as new listings. It will be a challenge locating some of the new modern listings. It had several new listings I have never heard of!
Mine arrived today!
Not very happy about this!! Makes you wonder if this was the problem for the delay!

I paid for mine and was told that it wouldn't be released until September 5
I advised on the book in 2015! I still have the emails. An 8 year delay has nothing to do with having it printed in China and everything to do with a million other things.
I am much more disappointed that they seemed to choose new Mercury Dime varieties based on what authors owned instead of what was significant! The 1943-D/D is a terrible variety with a ton of examples out there, hardly any premium for them if any. I own two in PCGS MS65FB. Then there's the topic of photos and pick-up points / die markers. The photos look like they were shot on a film camera in the 1980s or 1990s instead of what is available today. The book format is sooo outdated and then when it takes you 10+ years to update the book...and it isn't done very well. Come on. PCGS should consider a proper list for the using 2023 tech...take a look through Variety Vista / CONECA etc. Online resources are easy to update. The book format is outdated and flawed.
PCGS refused to accept the new coins for attribution at Pittsburgh ANA. I only had 5 because I have not spent much time on them. It very well could be many months before they make a decision on what to include in the complete variety set....and they will probably only select coins from the new CPG which is a terrible approach. As long as people rely on the CPG, the entire registry set will continue to be flawed.

I bet it didn't help the process either.

As much as I appreciate that, another knowledgeable person advised on the Mercury Dime Series...BUT ONLY AFTER the authors had made all their decisions, not to mention years ago in 2015 along with me. Think of them as serving as a proof reader for the coins already selected. Varieties were recommended but ignored and I am guessing it is because the authors did not own examples. It makes no sense.
If the authors needed examples of coins to look at or high quality images of the right coins to include, they are available. They would have been made available to benefit the greater coin collecting community. Here is a FANTASTIC RPM for the Mercury Dime Series. It is nearly impossible to get much better than this and it is NOT in the new CPG. It makes no sense.
