Found this roll hunting yesterday

This is the 2nd W that I have found. Wish it was in better shape; but still awesome I think.

Nicely done - I can't even remember to look at the few quarters that pass through my pockets.

I am in a constant search mode for W quarters in the wild - and I shop with cash often just to get change. The only one I have found in the wild, was in a Coinstar reject slot. Cheers, RickO

Cool! I found a "W" a couple years ago, not that one though. I haven't really been paying attention since then.

    Lol,
    Com'on guys!
I do realize the "not looking for" concept, but one must truly want it, to find it!
Some may know me here, in the 3 -4 years searching, I'm on my 205th W!
First off, ask your bank for a whole box of Quarters.
    Good Luck, guys.

Hey @ricko- I bet your chances of finding a W quarter in the wild would increase 1000%, if you spent 50% less time on this forum. 😂 🤣..............Am I right? 😉 Sorry, I repeat myself. I couldn't resist. 😂 🤣

It's a shame you can see how they are really deteriorating in circulation.

It's also a shame that the Mint couldn't have distributed the W's more equitably throughout the country. Some guys have found none, others have found hundreds.

I see the real shame as threefold: 1) they didn't/don't circulate. I'll bet that between 90 and 95% of these were found in rolls. 2) the mintmark doesn't make the coin distinctive. If one of our non-collecting friends was looking through, say, a roll of quarters he'd be very unlikely to say "Hey, this is different!" People would be more excited by a wheat cent they got in change. And I'll bet that most of our non-collecting friends has a '50s circulated wheatie saved aside because they just know it's rare and valuable. 3) they're just too common. People today just aren't going to get excited by finding a coin worth $5 to $20 in their change. Don't misunderstand me; they'll absolutely take the money, but they're not going to do a ton of extra work to find these coins. I mean when we were told to "check our change" for a 1943 copper cent that was worth up to $250,000, that was a lot of money. What they can get from trotting this quarter down to a dealer wouldn't buy them a movie ticket.

The problem with these quarters is that the whole very expensive plan has brought almost no one (maybe no one at all) into the hobby. A success would look like people saying "These are kind of cool. I wonder what else there is in this hobby. I think it happened some with the statehood quarters, but I think most of those new "collectors" plugged the fiftieth quarter into their coin board with a sigh of relief and shoved it into a desk drawer never to be seen again. Not at all here.

    Then what does?

That's probably because the average American probably never even heard of the W quarters.

Yes, I'd agree. The statehood quarters were very popular and probably brought many into the coin collecting hobby.
