What was I thinking when I bought this beat up old girl?

She surely won't win any beauty prize but after sitting on my watchlist for over a year I did a deep dive on the 1848 N-39 last night. Here is what I found:
PCGS has graded 5 in total....of the 3 MS two of them are in the Registry sets ahead of me.
I consulted some auction catalogues of well known Large Cent collections and my findings were as follows:
Ted Natzger did not have an example, Robbie Brown had 2 examples...MS62 and EF45, JR Frankenfield had a VG10, Jack Robinson had a G6 that went for $165 back in 1989.
All my research led me to believe this girl needed a good home with someone who would appreciate her for her R5+ and her good looks relative to some of her more well known sisters. Tell the story of an ugly duckling in your collection!

It's a decent coin for the grade.

Nice buy, Gorgeous coin! I have a growing appreciation for 1800s coinage in the 10-35 grade range and enjoy the “honest wear” they seem to display. Particularly when they are copper and have no corrosion areas.

The old large coppers are fascinating to me but are an area I have typically shied away from in my numismatic journey so far.

    I like it.
Served its purpose well, as intended yet left enough for a seasoned collector to admire and appreciate.

Thought this thread would be a lot more illegal by the title. :D

    What’s the PUP?

@Ownerofawheatiehorde a very nice example of the N-2 variety. Excellent photo showing the strong repunching of the 1 at the base..actually an extension of the upright of the 1. You can even see the weak line under the peak of the 1. Nice LC.

Old copper is fascinating and a bit magical. That was good money during those times and they saw a lot of commerce. Cheers, RickO

She needs love, too! :D just like her ‘prettier’ sisters. ;)

Seriously, she was worth it for her rarity rating…Well done!! ✅

There’s someone for everyone. Pretty is only one of the important things. Personality is also very important and she appears to have plenty. Very attractive coin. Congratulations. Thanks 🙏
